Yes he would be silly to not take money now. But I expect he will still ask for the moon when he is able.
Players are making $45-50 mil a year. Can’t see him settling for less than most possible.
Thought exercise, you can have $123 million over the next three years (headmath of a max contract after a 10 percent cap raise and no R&E)...or you can have $126 million over the next three years + earned interest on an early raise. Which do you choose? Because the first option is a max contract while the second is an r+e that is a max contract this year but is flat over the next two. Or we can R+E him to the max and give 8 percent raises which will earn him about an additional 8 million but is still lower than the yearly average of a max contract after a 10 percent rise in the cap.
Unpacking a lot here:
It makes sense but does Markkanen really want to be in Utah for his prime (while making a buttload of money) just to see the team tank for at least 1 more year, then try to be competitive with youngsters trying to learn the game? Of course he says he likes it there, that is how he is supposed to respond.
I would rather trade Markkanen now for younger players that fit Utah's needs and picks spread out over the next several drafts. The difficulty is deciding which of the young players has elite potential.
Utah is going to find themselves with too many picks and not enough spots for the players. 2 picks in 25, 2 in 26, 4 in 27, 2, in 28, 3 in 29 = potentially 13 new players.
I could see Utah offering Kessler and a 27 FRP (Minn/Clev) for someone like K. Ware of Miami. Gives Utah a starting center for the foreseeable future.
Then whatever return Utah can get for Collins/Sexton/Markkanen/Clarkson. Looked at a trade of:
Utah sending Collins/Sexton
Utah returning Simmons/Whitehead/29 FRP (least of Brooklyn)
Utah gets a player that will come off the books in 1 season versus the 2 of Collins/Sexton. Not much is coming form a trade for either so, take the salary reduction a year early. Helps Utah tank in the standings further.
Starts to build the youthful team -
Collier/George/Simmons
Sexton/George/Williams
Williams/Sensabaugh/Whitehead
Collins/Hendricks/Simmons
Ware/?
Brooklyn trades Simmons/Whitehead/29 FRP
Brooklyn receives Collins/Hunter
Brooklyn gets a PF to pair with Johnson/Claxton/Thomas. Not enough value to change their trajectory in the tank scenario but both are young enough (26) to fit in with Claxton. They can be moved next near as expiring contracts.
Atlanta trades Hunter
Atlanta receives Sexton
Sexton goes home to Georgia. He can run beside Young/Daniels. Moving Hunter frees up room for Risacher/Johnson wings.
