Toronto - Cleveland

Post#1 » by Godaddycurse » Wed Jul 24, 2024 12:13 am

Toronto trade: Agbaji, Boucher
Cleveland trade: Niang, Okoro (S&T 3/45)

Why for Cleveland: Clear payroll for next year when mobley and mitchells extension kicks in. Duck the tax this year
Why for Toronto: Eat Niangs contract to add the better 3/D player in Okoro
Why for Okoro: get more than MLE

I would. Okoro still has his fans so it might not be popular. No idea if the actual Cavs fans or Okoro would. He might want a P.O. in that last year.

Is that allowed? I thought has to be 3 yrs without options for S&T (ie option allowed on 4th yr only)

This is one of those "I guess?" kind of trades. At $15 million a year, I'd probably just keep Okoro.
Well at least we're not Detroit!

How’s Okoro’s defense? He was advertised as a defensive prospect a few years ago….his offense seems to be meh.

This is a Danny Green type of player, without DGs intangibles? For $15M? Logic says he will go cheaper….especially if he is still unsigned and we’re nearing August.

I believe the Cavs could rescind the QO, making him unrestricted, and S&T him. Still waiting on the Jazz/Lauri shoe to drop, but it seems increasingly likely that he'll play on the Q.O. and I'm not really seeing much upside to the Cavs in terms of playing out the season with him on the Q.O.

I think this is a deal both sides should really look at. Toronto has some really good young offensive players and Okoro would help the other end. But he’s not going to ruin the tank if it goes that direction.

I’d wonder what Cleveland needs to add to get Kelly instead of Boucher?

But like it as is.

I’d rather do this with LA for Rui personally.

Seeing Nembhard get 3/$59, I find it hard to see Okoro that far behind. Something to keep in mind, as it makes deal like this that much less likely.

Nembhard broke out in the playoffs, what did Okoro do in the playoffs?

I get that it would take at least a slight overpay to pluck Okoro away but the contract seems high compared to what Martin or Marshall got this offseason. I'd probably feel better about it if it were frontloaded to provide some more flexibility later.

he would just take the Q.O. if the best deals available were Martin/marshall equivalents. Okoro did shoot better than those 2 last year and is much younger so i think he would get more

I am a bit surprised. My feeling was Okoro was piece of the future for the Cavs?

Yeah, I'm probably haggling over pennies.

My feeling is that Okoro playing out the season on the Q.O. likely ends badly for the Cavs anyway, so if that's where this is headed, it's probably better to get ahead of it. I like him as a person, and he's only 23, but I fear he's pretty close to his ceiling.

I don't get it, sorry. I think Toronto needs to stop adding long-term deals to non-difference makers with no franchise player in house. And for Cleveland, its fine to dump some salary, but they also are trying to win now. Would like this better for them if they ended up with a rotation player back which they don't get here. Needs a 3rd team for the Cavs imo.

difference between this trade and other ones like hunter/johnson

1) okoro is much younger
2) okoro is a better defender, esp at POA which we need to lessen workload on Barnes on D
3) we won't have capspace anyways for next few years
4) most importnat of all, we are not giving up anything substantial

He had a nice 4 game series against Boston, and shot well throughout the Playoffs, but that's not exactly a large sample size. On the other end, to your point, Okoro did not do himself any favors in Playoffs.

I'd rather pass on Okoro, he just doesn't seem to be a playoff type player, as teams pretty much just leave him alone in the corner to shoot the 3 - it was a disaster for him and the team at 25%. No denying his defense though but I'd rather not pay him to see if he can right his ship when the team already has the same player in Agbaji for 2 more cheap years. Doesn't feel like the right time.
