Jerami Grant to Indiana (Dec 15th)
IND trades: Obi Toppin, Aaron Nesmith, 2025 IND 2nd, 2027 UTA 2nd
POR trades: Jerami Grant
Indiana clears some minutes for Walker and Sheppard but upgrades their small forward position. Assuming Portland doesn't get offered a first (and they might, I think some team should do it ... like LAL or DAL), they get two youngish players who have some trade value + decent 2nds.
Pacers rotation:
Turner/Jackson/Siakam
Siakam/Walker/Grant
Grant/Sheppard/Mathurin
Nembhard/Mathurin
Haliburton/Nembhard/McConnell
POR trades: Jerami Grant

I'm not sure Grant provides more quality minutes than Nesmith + Toppin, tbh. I don't think Indiana goes in this direction.

Grant at 3 was barely doable back when he was younger but now it's just not gonna work.

Indiana should have zero interest in Grant. But could possibly be open to something around Deni for J. Walker???

Hard pass for POR.
Just gave up 2 FRP, including a lotto pick, 2 SRP and Brogdon for Avdija.
Why would POR swap a player we value that much for Walker?
Plus we already have a J Walker. Very confusing.

I was hoping and expecting this to be one of the first replies. You did not disappoint. Jroy have it all.

I mostly consider Grant and Turner's rebounding inadequacies to be a flaw teams can compensate and adjust for but playing both Turner and Grant together could be a real problem...

Walker has not shown enough for him to be the center of a trade for Deni

Would put Indy almost $6m into the tax, and I think Indy would simply prefer Nesmith and Toppin. There’s really no interest in adding salary like this right now.

I won’t posit trade offers, but yeah. If Indy is interested in anyone in Portland it’s probably just Avdija?

Not a good deal for Indiana even without those picks

This seems like a really weak offer for Deni.

Re: Jerami Grant to Indiana (Dec 15th)
I would be fine with Nesmith as the prize in a Grant deal. I think he is just young enough to be a rebuild piece and his 3/D skillset would fit well if we are assuming that Scoot / Sharep ‘hit’ + Deni as a ball handling guy.
I would prefer to flip OB into something else.
That being said, I would not expect Indiana to do this trade. I don’t think the want to invest 30M in a Grant level guy when they have high hopes for Jarace.

My biggest issue with Nesmith as the prize is why would we be adding him when we already have Avdija and Camara locked in at SF? I consider that our most secure position now with 2 guys viewed as long term pieces. I’d rather not force people into playing out of position to allow the minutes and going back to being undersized when we are finally shaping a roster that has size. Every other position besides SF has at most one guy expected to be a long term piece.

Camara and Deni can play PF.
Deni actually may be better at PF with his rebounding. He played more PF last year (42%) than any other in his career and it also was his best season. In todays NBA at 6’9 215lbs he is for sure Pf sized.
Camara FWIW played 84% of his minutes at PF last year per BBRef.

Re: Jerami Grant to Indiana (Dec 15th)
It's encouraging to see a fanbase (POR) with a realistic appraisal of what their guy Grant can net.
I agree with those who don't think Grant is a fit with Indy because of (1) salary and the luxury tax implications and (2) Grant's issues with rebounding and the problematic fir with Turner.

I’d love to see a Wizards fan chime in to see what position he was playing more in the last portion of the season.
I’m surprised the lineups ended up with Toumani almost always as PF. When watching him, I see a SF. He is assigned to guard the best perimeter player of every team when he’s in, and he plays on the perimeter himself on offense.
In general though, I’m tired of small Blazers teams. One of my favorite parts of landing Deni is we can finally role with oversized SFs again instead of more 6’5” SFs, and this trade goes right back to bumping them to PF to make room for a 6’5” SF. Pacers run n gun enough to pull off small ball, but I don’t see Blazers being run n gun, so I want true size. Additionally, Blazers are still a legit star away from actually building a winning team. Therefore I want as many swings at the fence as we can, so I’d still rather Blazers go for a 1st rather than adding another role player who feels like he is ready to be a complimentary piece next to a star.

Ya not arguing against the big swing preference.
More regarding PF - in today’s league I think Camara and Deni are pretty ideal swing forwards. You don’t find many 6’11 PF with enough mobility to play PF in the league. 6’9 and around 220 is what the new PF looks like these days.

I’d like Nesmith more as a replacement for Simons. He could get some SF minutes, but I’d want him to have backup minutes at SG behind Sharpe.

I'd say that the Pacers have no want or need for Grant on that contract. He looks negative to me. Some team might give Portland something for him, but not Indiana.
