NYK-CHA (sign then trade on Dec 15th)

Post#1 » by Toine85 » Tue Sep 10, 2024 2:00 am

Is this legal in the CBA?

Knicks sign Markelle Fultz to the taxpayer MLE $5m and then wait to trade him along with the protected WAS 1st rounder for Nick Richards?

Once again Charlotte is not trading Richards without a center coming back.

We already have a center who may or may not be ready to start the season in Mark Williams.

Surely if Charlotte had wanted Fultz this offseason they would've just signed him?

However yes this is legal, a player who changes teams as a free agent is eligible to be traded after 3 months or December 15th whichever is later.

Well, let’s talk it through. NY is hard capped at the second apron already, so using the taxpayer MLE won’t hard cap them in any new way. They have about $7m to the 2nd apron, so signing a player to that $5m would keep them under the second apron. Adding a pick to a player in trade doesn’t create any hard cap issues. The player in question would make as much or more than Richard’s, so you wouldn’t be taking back any extra salary in trade and incurring a hard cap at the first apron, so you’re good there. And, you’d wait the required amount of time necessary to trade a player that is signed in the offseason of December 15 or 3 months after signing, whichever is later. So, if you signed Fultz, or whomever, in the next 6 days, then yeah, December 15th would work. Every day after the 15th delays when a player could’ve traded by an additional day.

Yeah, it’d be legal in terms of sheer cap/CBA mechanics.

Well this would happen Dec 15th or later, so Charlotte would know by then if Mark Williams would be able to start. But if it’s a backup C that worries you, we can have a second trade: Jericho Sims for Seth Curry to balance out the depth charts a bit.

It would be more for the pick and having Fultz as a salary ballast.

Is Richards actually an upgrade to Sims or Achiuwa?

Outsider view: too close to call, so not one I'd want NYK to take a risk on with their limited flexibility. His extension was for $5M, which is the best measure of his market value, and that indicates he'd be a fringe-of-the-rotation player just like Sims or Achiuwa

I continue to see Richards mentioned as a possible piece for the Knicks but I don't know anything about his game. I decided to read through the Hornets board to see what they thought of him. They seem to have been excited with his extension in 2023 but were disappointed with what they saw from him last year especially when Williams got injured.

This is one of the scouting reports given by a guy that considered himself to be one of the more pro-Richards guys on the board.

"Athletic, strong, good offensive rebounder, good FT shooter. Low bball IQ. Out of position on D a lot. Seems to lose focus. Occasionally will flash something different but offensive game limited to putbacks, lobs. Solid backup big but not a guy you can rely on to play winning basketball. We were forced to start him last year and meh."

From the description it is hard to see how much of an upgrade he would be from Precious or Sims if at all. He doesn't seem like a guy I would want to give up value for but maybe he would look better and more consistent in a better situation. It's just odd to read the Hornets' board and see posts hoping to pick up someone like Precious to push Richards down to the 3rd string and then see Knicks' fans hoping to acquire Richards to improve the center rotation when they already have Precious.

Also Hornets' fans seem very concerned about Richards as a backup since they are worried about the injury history of their starting center. The Knicks would be in the same boat as them.

Just looking at pure numbers, I would say he's probably comparable to Precious, but definitely an upgrade over Sims. Richards in previous years has averaged about 2.1 blks per 36 mins, while Sims is generally about half that. From a rim protection standpoint, I think Richards can be the backup center and Achiuwa can back up Randle at the 4 instead.

Getting blocks doesn't mean he's defending the rim well. We've seen plenty of hideous defenders put up impressive #s by chasing blocks.

yeah Richards is one of them unfortunately.

I'd do this without hesitation just on the off-chance the Wizards improve to being just regular bad in the next two years and wind up conveying a 9th-10th pick at some point. Hell, I'll take two Wizards 2nds for Richards without hesitation. I don't think he's any better than JaVale McGee who is a FA right now.
