Cameron Johnson could probably be had for this same package and fits a lot better and/or Bogi for a little less.
It's a buyer's market with all the tanking teams already making their rosters available. Maybe in a vacuum Cam is the better player but it really depends on a team's needs. Looking at the Magic I would say Sexton is the better fit as they could really use a dynamic guard.
Sexton is quite literally one of if not the worst defensive guard in the league. This is not an exaggeration either and comparatively the last time I checked Cole was better on that front which is saying a lot.
Yes, Orlando’s defense is great and should be able to cover some of Sextons limitations on that end. However, if Cole is receiving DNP’s due to his defensive deficiencies I’m not sure what we’re realistically expecting from Sexton.
And back to my original point regarding playoffs where Sexton will be hunted and become unplayable/liability.
We have enough data to definitively say that Sexton will never be a neutral defender and anyone that thinks different is fooling themselves.
Orlando’s defense works because everyone buys in and plays their part. Whoever is unable doesn’t play as we’re currently seeing with Cole.
Orlando indeed needs a dynamic guard, but not to the expense of their identity.
I see Orlando showing interest in Schroder/Brogdon way before someone like Sexton.
Ive seen your posts on Anferee Simons, i thought he was the worst defensive guard in the league. how are you making this determination? what stat or stats? There are plenty of teams that play players that arent all-nba defense. Luka is a bad defender. Tyler Herro, Curry, Kyrie Irving (Cleveland time). He would be a bench player coming in to score, we could live with his defense.

I feel really confident that Mose, the rest of the staff, and that roster is going to be able to incorporate just about any player into the rotation and still be one of the best defenses in the league. Team has been defending better than their paper talent for years now.
Kidd has actually been good in Dallas, but still mad Dallas had this guy and let him go. And still disappointed in Rick Carlisle who worked against him because he was mad Luka was closer to him. I mean he's the king of petty, but when you head the coach's association you don't get to do that.

I agree but he has a history of just pulling guys off the market when he doesn't get his asking price. How many times have we seen him settle for less?
I just don't think either of these picks have a ton of value. Not that it isn't enough for Sexton because I actually think it is a good deal for Utah, but idk if getting two picks in the 20s in this draft does a lot for Ainge/Utah. I think they would value picks further out that they can use in a big trade rather than go role player hunting in the 20s, because chances are Denver and Orlando are both playoff locks with the way the season is shaping up.
Nailed it. Not a ton of value in low draft picks this upcoming season. Rather have unprotected out in the future that have potential of being higher.

D-LEBRON is a pretty solid/reliable individual defensive stat.
I apologize, I misspoke. Simons isn’t the worst.
He’s the 5th worst for all qualifying guards this season (-1.77). He ended last season as the 5th worst as well (-1.82).
Sexton is currently 3rd worst among all qualifying guards this season (-2.17) and was 7th last season (-1.74).
If we can’t “live” with Cole we def. cant live with Sexton especially in a playoff setting.
I genuinely get the infatuation to acquire a dynamic scoring guard, but these numbers are not neutrally bad, they are complete liability/4 against 5 on defense which is not the kind of player our front office normally goes after.
Furthermore, Sexton isn’t the offensive juggernaut you think he is according to O-LEBRON.
If we’re *completely negating defense there’s better options:
Dennis Schroder
Jordan Clarkson
D’Angelo Russell
Spencer Dinwiddie
Anfernee Simons
If we care a little about defense but still need good offensive output there’s also better options:
Dalano Banton
Malcolm Brogdon
Grayson Allen
And just to note Cameron Johnson is currently sporting a +1.66 for O-LEBRON this season, that would rank him top-8 amongst all wings in the NBA. Over players like Markkanen, Derozan, Siakam etc.

maybe it is the style of play? i see 8 Utah players with negative D-Lebron. and no one is calling Sexton an offensive juggernaut, but he is a lot more efficient (PER 15 to 11.2, TS .606 to .491) and a better 3 pt shooter (close to 41% the past 2 years vs 32%)

thank you for the wonderful piece on why we shouldn't put so much stock in obscure advanced stats...sometimes the eyes work.

Re: ORL / UTA is Sexton the missing piece?
The Jazz are in a unique situation where I believe future picks are actually more valuable than picks this year. The Jazz are already super young and have 2-3 picks every season for years. I think Danny would rather have one unprotected pick in 28-30 than two low draft picks this year.
I could be wrong, but that’s my feeling. The Jazz probably aren’t going to consolidate a bunch of picks for a proven player for 2-3 years. So having those future picks is valuable.
So instead of two picks this season in the late first round I think one pick in 3-7 years out would be better. Which might make it easier for competing teams to make a trade if they value the present value of picks versus the future. Which I think teams on the cusp of competing would because they know they need cheap players to compliment their star players while the payroll goes up. Where a pick 3-7 years out can be seen as fine to deal with because if the team doesn’t get into the upper tier that can trade away their star players for draft capital.
Just my two cents. If I am Ainge I want to trade Collins, Clarkson, Sexton for FRP’s as far out as possible unless it’s this season and a guaranteed high draft pick…which is unlikely.

I'm not a big Sexton fan (as I think his issues as a starter go beyond just his defense) but he's easily worth more than this. Cole Anthony is a homeless man's version of Sexton and doesn't have positive trade value.

i get that cole has no value ..but a first is all i would give and would have to be 2025..i really think it would disrupt team and do not see were his min come from right now cole and even harris do not get min so what take min from black? suggs? kcp? and pretty sure he wont like 10-12 min a night...i mean is that worth more then 20 mill plus a first...more then that?..i would give some 2nds next summer if cole does not turn it around to dump exp contract before i gave more

Tbc, I think it costs 2 seconds or a lotto protected 1st just to turn Cole Anthony into a useful rotation piece and Sexton is more than that. If you don't want to Sexton stepping on Black's minutes I get that, but once the deadline has come and gone, you're pot committed to that position. It's going to be difficult to win a playoff series with your current guard rotation.
I personally wouldn't be all that concerned with KCP's minutes. He can start, and depending on the circumstances finish, but dialing back his minutes in between might actually prove beneficial.

Agree...there's nothing wrong with having 4 solid guards in the rotation (with Gary Harris standing by). That doesn't knock AB out of the game at all...also, KCP and Black are big enough to get some time at SF. I think it's maybe one mid first for Sexton in a vacuum and another late first or even a couple srps (like jbk said) for Cole's deal...that's basically the initial idea here. Jett's value, imo, is like one of those late frps...although I think he'll come out as a solid rotation sniper soon. He's also big enough to to be a SF - actually, probably a more natural position. UTA is so deep with kids, like Sensabough, for example, that they might prefer picks to bundle for a more prominent piece.

well magic were 1 game from series win last yr and big upgrade with kcp replacing fultz ..every other rotation player is better and improving..i look at sexton as giving up more points and hurting more then he would give or help not guy i want..if his value is more fine let other team have him no big deal..i am not interested in giving shots or taking min from the core ...no skipping steps...i like that all are being pushed and will only help down the road..i want to see how magic play with paulo back for 2nd half season were franz plays with 2nd unit when paolo rests
