Help for DAL while Luka is out

Post#1 » by aguiar95 » Fri Dec 27, 2024 12:41 pm

With Luka out for almost 20 games, I sense that Nico will try to find an offensive backourt to help carry the load while he's out, without gutting their 8-man rotation (would add a guy to become a 9-man rotation). Also think we're getting a backup PF on the buyout market, so no worries dealing Kleber + O-Max.

Some options:

Kleber + O-Max + '25 PHI 2nd for Jordan Clarkson;

Kleber + O-Max + Powell + '25 DAL 1st + '25 PHI 2nd for Collin Sexton;

O-Max + Exum + '25 DAL 1st for Tre Mann;

Kleber + O-Max + '25 DAL 1st + '31 DAL 1st swap + '25 PHI 2nd for Coby White;

O-Max + Exum + '25 DAL 1st + '31 DAL 1st swap + '25 PHI 2nd for Cam Thomas.

Besides the Clarkson one, all of them are young (possible Kyrie replacement down the road) and would be able to carry the load offensively. When Luka gets back, Dinwiddie would be the 3rd string PG (that's his place).

Clarkson fits the instant offense bill but he’s been pretty bad this year, don’t think you’d need much incentive.

Only guy that moves me is Sexton, but hard to come up with 18M, I also don't think Maxi is as expendable as we think, definitely not both Maxi and OMax.
Mavs also have the 25 1st as an asset and Jazz has 3 picks next year so it doesn't look like they need another one.

I don’t know what Dallas will do, but I hope they don’t use their last assets to trade for a fill-in for Luka that can’t play decent minutes with Luka and Kyrie later on.

I’d rather force Grimes into a bigger role than some of these targets personally.

If you want to go get an offensive punch, I’d be looking at a bigger wing that will have a role with the two stars.

The reason a team gets a 2nd superstar as offensively gifted as Kyrie is in part for moments like this. And Dallas has seen Grimes, Marshall, and Dinwiddie all have stretches of being a 2nd scorer. I think you start by seeing what can be done in house.

But agree 100% with jay. Not giving up assets and rotation players that fit with Luka to maybe win one more game while he is out and then be less ready to win playoff series.

Can't panic into bad trades, but I expect this board to be littered with more deals like give us PJ/Lively/picks for Randle/DDV that are just absolutely awful for Dallas.

Guess its time to take a break from RealGM until Luka returns if we're going to keep having threads like these

That's 44MPG of starting shooter and backup PF, this reduces depth not increase it...
Mavs starting lineup works, it works very well, Maxi when healthy also works, can't see the Mavs messing with that for a backup PF.

I don't get what's wrong with this OP. He thinks Dallas should add help(I might disagree, but its a legit position to hold) and then offered a variety of suggestions while looking for more.

We are going to get some ideas we find terrible for sure, but a thread like this feels like the right approach, no?

You are right. It was more a combination of the Randle thread, my disappointment with the Luka injury, and Commanders being a playoff lock.

But as with life and human nature in general, we tend to focus on the negative when there is so much more to be thankful and give praise for, so I should focus on the good

Trying some of my own bad ideas.

I’ve been calling GSW for years, but I’m back at it. Go get Butler and let Dallas have Wiggins. Go get Cam Johnson and let Dallas have Kuminga and pay Brooklyn.

We have Chicago on the phone, let’s ask about Ayo. Or Patrick Williams. Or both.

It seems like Dallas has guys that could step up, and they are still a solid team. No need to trade real assets for a guy that really doesn’t move the needle.
If anything a minor trade for depth while Luka is out. ..and they are already deep so that maybe doesn’t make a ton of sense either.
That said the idea that looked interesting to me was Cam Thomas. Might need to fiddle with the value some, but IDK. For me the Mavs should sit on their hands.

Is Exum due back before Luka? Would substituting him for Prosper here make sense, just to give the Mavs another active body? Might be the easiest option.
