MIA/MIN/MIL/DET - help me balance the pick(s) owed to DET

Post#1 » by HornetJail » Fri Jan 3, 2025 10:32 pm

Heat trade Butler, Robinson
Heat receive Middleton, Randle

Wolves trade Randle, Garza*, 2025 DET 1st (current prot is 1-13, 1-11, 1-9, otherwise DET 2nd 2027)
Wolves receive Portis, Beasley, Fontecchio

Bucks trade Middleton, Portis, Connaughton*, two of Beauchamp/Livingston/Smith, 2030 OR 2031 1st swap to DET
Bucks receive Butler, Garza*

Pistons trade Beasley, Fontecchio
Pistons receive Robinson, Connaughton*, two min salaries from MIL, own 1st returned, rights to swap 2030 OR 2031 1sts with MIL

--

done in two parts:
1)
Bucks trade Connaughton for Garza using Detroit's cap space. Bucks duck below the 2nd apron, allowing them to aggregate salaries as a 1st apron team.
2)
The rest of the trade

--

Miami gets out of the Butler business for two productive (but overpaid) vets and keep it moving. Herro/Middleton/Jaquez/Randle/Bam + Rozier/Burks/Highsmith/Jovic/Ware

Minnesota breaks Randle into a few role players, as he's not a fit. Beasley is having an outstanding 3-point shooting season, and Fotecchio was good last year too. Portis can score. MIN could use all three. Conley/Ant/McDaniels/Naz/Gobert + NAW/Beasley/DDV/Minott?/Portis

Milwaukee adds Butler and tries to make the most of the present. Very very very thin roster as every player past the top 4 is a minimum, but it works. Lillard/Jackson/Butler/Giannis/Blopez + Wright/Green/Trent/Prince/Garza?

Detroit eats salaries for this year and next for potentially significant draft capital. Robinson replacing the shooting they send out, so no real loss on the court.

MIN is already eight deep, which means Naz Reid, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and Donte DiVincenzo all have to come off the bench. They want to find minutes for Dillingham and Josh Minott, and they drafted Terrence Shannon Jr because he was NBA ready.

It’s not the right direction for the team to break up their #2 guy in Randle (7/4.5/20) into three bench guys.

Portis could easily walk and we cannot pay him if he declines the option. Beasley was here before, we upgraded him with DDV, and don’t have minutes for him. Simone is not gonna beat out Josh Minott for minutes. You have Randle as a negative and the Wolves giving up a first for the privilege of dumping him for nothing we need. Not only do you need cut out the first from this proposal, you probably need to add a first to the Wolves for making this trade, and we still say no. Just cut us out and redesign.

That's a terrible deal for Minnesota. There is no way the Wolves would trade Randle for multiple poorly fitting role players, and having them add a 1st makes an already bad trade much worse.

Beasley might be Detroit's second best player. Not in a rush to trade him. Though the draft capital makes it worth consideration.

I’d be happy for MN to send out Randle for Portis and draft compensation.

I'd be in a very big rush if it meant getting a first back.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I think there is a 50/50 chance whatever trade the Wolves make to clear Randle also involves the Pistons getting their pick back. Who and what gets traded is the mystery.
