Butler to the Cavs

Post#1 » by GoBobs » Sun Jan 5, 2025 8:02 pm

Heat out: Jimmy, whatever filler

Why: move on, get some picks, send Jimmy to cleveland

Cavs out: levert, Strus, Niang, future first top 1 protected

Why: go for it

I think that’s a good offer and destination.

If I'm the Cavs, I don't think I want to mess with the chemistry and possibly screw up a good thing. I think the Cavs should be about the last team in the league interested in an ageing star

It is true that the Cavs core has yet to show that they can make a deep run in the playoffs, and maybe Jimmy would help with that, but then again, stripping their depth could mean the juice is not worth the squeeze. All of the core have more than a couple of years of their primes left to figure out how to win together, and figure out what cost-effective role players to put around the core (hint: not Jimmy)
In a no-win argument, the first poster to Let It Go will at least retain some peace of mind

I really hope the Cavs have zero interest in committing $100M to Butler when he's 37 and 38. I feel like LBJ broke everyone's understanding of the impact of age on professional athletes. LBJ's not the new median in the center of the bell curve. He's the last data point before you hit zero on the curve.

This trade doesn’t move anyone in the core. If things don’t work chemistry wise the Cavs can just not extend Jimmy.

The Cavs core is two bigs and two guards. They don’t have a great wing to match up with other wings. This trade gives them a proven playoff performer at a position on need.

If you think Butler is returning more than a first after asking for a trade and then being suspended 7 games,…………….you will be disapoint, son

I'd prefer to let some other team convince themselves that they can wait on an extension decision until after Jimmy has played out his current contract and Jimmy will be just fine with that. That strains credulity IMO.

The Cavs are a real contender with a weak spot at SF, as a stand alone half year rental I think trading for Jimmy has merit. As long as they don’t give up too much, I would increase the protections on that pick to top 4 though.

See Harden, James

I forgot that Harden was making $50 million a season when LAC traded for him.
Well at least we're not Detroit!

Welcome to the NBA. Just because he makes a lot doesn't mean we're going to sacrifice value. This trade does nothing for the Heat. It's a pass.

It wouldn't surprise me if Butler yields a decent return. It only takes one idiotic FO.

Butler to the Cavs

Zero chance that gets it done.
1) Insufficient salary going out from the Cavs
2) The next pick the Cavs can trade is 2031; that pick is insufficient to move the needle for Butler.
3) The deal keeps Miami in the playoffs and conveys the pick, but the players don’t have future value.

To get to a deal Miami would minimally accept would sap the Cavs depth, remaining assets, and put them at significant risk if Butler walks.

Adding Jaylon Tyson makes the money work. Adding Okoro makes the money work with Love, Richardson, and Burks coming back to give Cleveland depth back.

Adding either is stacking future potential to Miami.
