I'm out of ideas for Portland to recover it.
Of the players Portland is shopping, none command it. Not Ayton, not J. Grant, not Simons, not Thybulle, not RWIII. Simons is the closest, but with him due 27 million next season, I don't think he commands a 1st round pick.
The Blazers core seems to me to be Scoot, Sharpe, Avdija, Camara.
The role players will make it hard to tank so it will be hard to add to that core. And hard to bid on players for trades if the Blazers don't have that 1st the Bulls are sitting on.
I think you are overvaluing the Blazers pick. It most likely conveys as a 2nd rounder, especially with vets being sent out. Blazers interest in getting it back is almost exclusively for flexibility, not because of the value of the pick itself. If we were sending any of the players actually worth a 1st, then we’d demand an actual first back instead of the return of our own.
This makes sense. And I forgot Clingan is a part of the core with Scoot, Sharpe, Avdija, Camara.
I do feel if they really want to plunge into a rebuild, it would be worth dumping the vet role players to help the tank and give them more time on the court together. I think the Blazers are shopping more contracts than most teams.
I agree we should send vets out to tank and get assets. I also don’t expect big returns for them either, just a bit more than we got in the OP. If you go back to my original post in this thread, I indicated a desire to mostly dump those players but just needed a bit more value. That is where I proposed us getting our 1st back, which as we just discussed, is worth more to Portland for flexibility sake, but otherwise is not a big value asset.
