Is a better star going to be made available for that?

Do you trade for the worst star available at a premium or wait? Market always set the price for me

Ingram and Butler probably could be had for less.
KAT was an off season bargain after waiting for right opportunity.

Massive overpay.

People fall in in love with the archetype and forget he just isn't a winning player.

By this weird definition, there are almost no “winning players”, meaning guys that are good enough, by themselves, to take a poor roster and make them a contender, or at least a playoff team.

MJ couldn’t do it (contender status) for example. Maybe Jokic qualifies, maybe early peak LeBron dragging the Cavs into the Finals through a weak conference. Wilt, I guess. Young Kareem. There are very few examples.

Now if you state “we’re not sure how he performs on a championship level team as a second option”, sure, that’s fair. But you can’t just assume he’d suck. Absence of evidence isn’t evidence of absence and all that.

Considering that for two seasons in a row Ainge had to sabotage the team to avoid the play in game I'd say we have plenty of evidence he is a winning player. Same goes for advance metrics, etc. etc. Frankly, I don't think there is a worse narrative in basketball than pointing at a great player on a bad team and saying they aren't a "winning player."

Randle, McDaniels and some combination of (1) Detroit FRP (2) removing protections from some of our picks that the Jazz own (3) Leonard Miller, Terrance Shannon Jr, Josh Minott for Markannen

Randle is a good tank commander and likely would not opt in to stay on Utah. McDaniels and solid futures are a solid haul.

Most of his value is that you can plug him in on just about any team and in any rotation and he'll be a good offensive compliment. That said, he's not a #1 option and he's on a huge, long term contract. You can say he's "worth" 2-3 picks, but those are likely going to be kinda mediocre picks from a playoff team. I don't think he's returning any premium assets like a top5 2025 pick or something.
