How did relying on Danny Green and Morris as backups work out the last two playoff runs?Trading for a guy like Sharpe allows us to start Wade at SF in certain matchups. Also, Wade has been injured in the last two playoff runs. Finally, I'm terrified about the prospect of Kenny playing Niang real minutes in the playoffs.

I feel Morris did his part. Danny Green was damaged goods, that one made no sense.

Morris and Niang played so poorly in the Magic series that we played without a true forward in Game 7, and I believe the guys who started all had to play 40+ minutes.

Morris had one good shooting game, and that was the only game he wasn't completely underwater in terms of +/-.

If you have to rely on these guys for more than 10 minutes a game in a series, you're screwed either way. That said, would I rather take my chances on a vet who has shown that he can play at a reasonably high level at some point in his career vs. a young guy who never has? Yes.

The Cavs could find a buyout guy but there’s no guarantee that the Cavs are going to be the best option for their ideal buyout player. As we’ve discussed, if the Cavs are healthy they don’t need anybody. There are teams that actually need 8th or 9th man while the Cavs are looking for a 12th or 13th man.

Trading for Sharpe guarantees they get their guy, guarantees they can solidify their big spot in the offseason, gives them optionality to trade Allen if they feel the need.

Nets: Johnson and Sharpe

Cavs get a couple guys that help in the now and Brooklyn gets a very lightly protected 1st and cap space for next year to help them pursue max free agents.

If you are a free agent, why would you pick the Nets?

Is this a joke?

It guarantees you have Sharpe, but does not guarantee the rest of that.

I guess Sharpe could simply play terribly after the trade and be a pointless acquisition, sure.

Assuming he earns his qualifying offer, the Cavs are very unlikely to lose him. No one's offering Sharpe a starter's salary. He can be the backup center, whether we keep Mobley and Allen or trade Allen and move Mobley to the starting 5.

No. Tell me why a max or near max player would choose the Nets? The salary can be matched elsewhere. So what drives a player to want to be in Brooklyn.
There are no significant players there. With a max player (mind you it has to be the right player) they will be an average team at best.
Look at the list of FAs for next year.

I mean, do we really know if Sharpe is any better than, say, someone like Damian Jones?

Three years (out of four) of positive on/off for Sharpe when backing up Claxton, zero years of positive on/off in Jones’s career is a place to start.

I could understand if your plan was to pick up a guy like Sharpe in the offseason, where you have 82 games to see if he can realistically provide value in the Playoffs, but grabbing him at that deadline with that thought is a big risk, and potential waste of time and assets.

No, it’s a small risk. Should costs 2nds. Don’t even have to send a player out. Fits into the MLE. Can leave him on the end of the bench or even cut him without much consequence if he doesn’t work out.
