Warriors get Durant w/Pistons

Post#1 » by jredsaz » Wed Feb 5, 2025 3:32 am

Warriors receive Kevin Durant
Suns receive Draymond Green, Gary Payton II, Johnathan Kuminga, GSW 2025 & 2027 1sts.
Pistons receive Dennis Schroder

Golden State gets their man back and still has flexibility for further moves. I assume if they are going this far in other future picks will be made available.

Phoenix adds Dray who might actually fit Booker and Beal pretty well. The value are the picks and the athletic Kuminga. Saves money this season and provides a path to duck second apron this summer.

Pistons get a combo guard who can help them win now at no cost.

I can't imagine the Pistons give away their space like this.

Why do you consider this "giving away" their capspace and not just addressing a glaring weakness for essentially free.

I mean I feel like Schroder is worth a second and he fills a need but maybe they get a second along with the player. How much you think they can sell that space for?

Is he reliable? I wonder if they would still pursue a follow up Draymond deal?

As far as the trade itself...

Another poster mentioned it, but Kuminga fits into a Nurkic for Valanciunas deal.

So something like...

Suns get:
Jimmy Butler
Lindy Waters
Warriors Pick(s)

Heat get:
Andrew Wiggins
Gary Payton II
Dennis Schroder
Kevon Looney
Gui Santos

Warriors get:
Kevin Durant
Haywood Highsmith
Kevin Love

Followed by...

Jusuf Nurkic and one of the 3 Suns picks to Washington
Kuminga and Valanciunas to Phoenix
Johnny Davis to Golden State

I get why the Suns want Draymond, but it kinda defeats the point of getting KD if he goes out. I would assume an actual KD deal doesn't include him.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. In previous years I'd agree with you but this year? It's different.

Fact is that the Warriors have made it quite clear that they need to make changes as they are currently not good enough to compete; and by all reports, they are aggressively pursuing stars. Under normal circumstances, I'm sure the Warriors would love to keep Draymond while adding a star. But if he's needed to get the deal done? I think they'd include him.

Draymond has declined – naturally – and he has never been an easy player to deal with. As his performances and availability have declined, his antics most definitely have not. So I don't think the Warriors are dead-set on keeping Draymond if his departure paves the way for the arrival of a superstar that improves the team's chances of winning.

So the first question to ask here is: would I take Durant over Green right now and for the next couple years? And the answer is: heck yes. And I say that as someone who someone who has long advocated for Draymond (the player) and who believes that he was more important to our dynasty between 2017 and 2019 than even Durant. The times have changed, though, and the Warriors as currently constructed are going nowhere and they desperately need to add offensive firepower.

Truth be told, if you ask me who I'd rather keep in trade – Wiggins or Green – the answer would be Wiggins (who is the other main player who can be used for salary matching for larger contracts). And if the Suns ask us to give Green up in order to get KD, I'd do it (provided that the rest of the trade works for me in terms of value); and again I'm not sure that the answer by our FO would be any different. Not anymore.

Totally agree. And Suns owner is a Michigan State guy just like Draymond.

Do the Pistons need a pg enough to take Schoder and get no picks?

This works for me. I would think that we won't need Jimmy with Draymond there, but who knows....

Could you imagine dealing with Draymond and Jimmy during some tough times?

Deal does probably make more sense if we get a couple seconds coming our way as well.

I don't see Draymond being a part of the deal, just because of the salaries, but I get why the Suns would do Jimmy for Durant if they can get those picks from Golden State. They'd have a relatively strong collection of picks and be pretty competitive at the same time.
