Embiid to Memphis?

Post#1 » by durantbird » Wed Feb 26, 2025 7:57 am

Might be a crazy idea but let's just throw it out there and see what you think.

Memphis get Embiid

Philly get Bane, Edey, Clarke, 25' FRP, 27' FRP

Philly depth chart:

Maxey
Bane / McCain
George / Oubre / Grimes
Clarke / Yabusele
Edey

Memphis depth chart:

Morant / Pippen Jr
Kennard / Vince
Wells / GG Jackson
JJJ / Aldama
Embiid

Philly start fresh around Maxey without the Embiid drama and they still stay competitive.

Memphis go all in with Morant JJJ Embiid as their leading trio. Their insane depth still keeps with a serviceable rotation.

Embiid isn't fetching a haul with his constant injuries and contract.

His value to Philly will be far more than any other team would be willing to offer for such an unreliable player.

Did you leave out Jared McCain in the "outgoing for Philly", OP? To paraphrase Muhammad Ali: "If Morey even DREAMS of getting this return for Embiid, he better wake up and apologize!"

Grizz pass on this. Tempting thought but doesn’t make sense for us.

Embiid for Edey, Clarke, Kennard, Bagley, and Konchar. Sixers get out of the contract and Memphis doesn't give up too much for the big risk. I'm not sure if people realize how bad the Embiid contract is yet.

Embiid is a clearly negative contract until he has his next surgery, recovers, and then shows he can play 75% of Philadelphia’s games at at least an All-Star (not MVP) level. No one’s taking that ridiculous contract for a guy that almost never plays and often sucks when he does.

He’s about to finish 3rd in the “worst contracts in the league” project, by the way, right next to Paul George. Philly has problems.

Sixers are not getting out of that contract unless they take back an equally bad contract or add multiple 1st round picks. Embiid is over 30 years old and damaged goods that may never recover.

I was fiddling around with the trade machine, and thats roughly what I came up with too. "bad" salary around Edey (or Bane, but Bane doesn't make sense with the Philly roster construction. Asking for BOTH, AND picks, is just sheer lunacy, in my books. MAYBE 3 to 5 years ago he had that value, but now you just plan for him to be injured, while HOPING he's not... Even with that deal, by the end of next season you've got half the salary off the books already, so it's not really bad salary, just neutral.

Picks should go the other way and even then I would decline.

I appreciate the creative idea. The theoretical Embiid would be awesome to have. I just don't have faith that we will ever get that (especially with our injury luck lol) and that is more than I'm willing to pay to find out.

I think it would have to be a team that has nothing to lose, that takes a risk with Joel... someone like the Clippers/Suns or maybe Sacramento? Zubac/Bogdanovic/DJJ/Eubanks/Kobe Brown for Embiid..
The Clippers are left with Harden/Dunn/Powell/Leonard/Embiid...

While the 76ers are left...

Zubac/Yabusele
George /FRP25
DJJ/Justin Edwards
Grimes/Bogdan
Maxey/Mccain

I like him better for the 76ers than the Clippers.. Now if the planets align and for some reason they make the playoffs and get healthy, they would be strong contenders.

If the Sixers could get future cap relief under the present circumstances, they can't, they should take it.

This is a Kevin Durant-like haul for a player making over 50 mill who can't stay on the court. I know people are scared to admit it, but Embiid is done. The only way Philadelphia can get off his salary is to get garbage back in return. This haul is for 2019 Embiid, not the current broken down version.

Embiid career is all but over I'm afraid, there's no solution for his knee issue and his weight makes a lot worse. I'd consider him a salary dump candidate, with a lot of assets attached. Otherwise, good luck. 76ers should fire Morey TBH.

Huh? Where are you getting the picks from? If Memphis is interested, the max should be Bane or Ja +Clarke straight up for Embiid.
