Who Wants Jonathan Kuminga?

Find the team that wants him enough to pay him enough to make him feel wanted. Work out a S&T that gets the Warriors a TPE and/or a useful player and be done with it.

I get this idea of matching any kind of medium contract, but I think this is mostly a mistake when teams do this "just to not lose an asset". Players are rarely assets when signing top of market free agency deals unless they are a star or have an unexpected jump. He might have said jump somewhere else, but it feels so unlikely in GS. I'd move on one way or the other, even if it means Brooklyn signs him and you just don't match.

Yeah I mean the only reason I would match is to keep the salary slot for a trade, and a TPE functionally does the same thing.

The thing about matching an offer is that the player can veto a trade for a full calendar year.

Kuminga is a risk that's best in someone else's roster, don't pay him and he probably walks, pay him and you probably regret it. If you can get back a decent FRP (Blazers will eventually convey and probably around mid first) and an expiring you can flip for something else, you should seriously consider it. It's a sunk cost, Warriors should move on.

Yeah I guess the full MLE is over $10M. Though I'm far from sure that he gets more than the full MLE given the lack of cap space around the league. At that level GS can more plausibly bluff that they'd match and would likely force some kind of dela. It's also a small enough salary that BYC issues become easier to work around.

The non taxpayer MLE is $14.105m for next year, and the taxpayer MLE is $5.685m. Projected, that is.

My guess is that someone would offer Kuminga at least a 3 year MLE. Maybe a lot of teams, if they feel they can get him without having to give up a player on their own roster.

I suspect that if the best offer he gets is a 3 year MLE, we match and then try to trade him before the 2025-26 deadline when people have forgotten about how this season ended.

With a QO he probably stays with GS all year (no other team would get Bird rights trading for him). Then he'd be completely dependent on other teams with cap space to get more than MLE money in 2026 - after another season getting inconsistent minutes behind Butler/Green.

A 3 year MLE deal is a safer bet for Kunminga - especially if it's a S&T deal where he moves to a team with a clear starting role for him. He's still plenty young enough to get a big 3rd contract if he gets the playing time to get nice counting stats.

Really doubt he and his agency would lock up a 3 year deal at the MLE. If anything, they’d probably try and negotiate a 1-2 year deal for more than the MLE? But, that’s also then where GS just tells him to sign the QO instead of paying him lore for just one year or so?

Because he didn't make starter minutes, his QO is $7.98M, just a shade above what he made this year on his 4th year scale. That would be a tough pill to swallow. He's got to be hoping for an offer sheet, almost any kind of offer will be welcome, IMO.

In a cap space desert I could see a team offering a decent player in return. Like would Toronto be willing to give up Poeltl money in exchange for a similar deal for Kuminga? It would make a lot of sense to me.

How does that make sense for Toronto? Barnes/Ingram are our starting forwards. We dont have a back up C as is and you want us to trade our starting C for a back up forward?

Figure the raps are going big in the draft and a young forward at that money is a better asset than a 30 year old center. But you make a fair point especially if the Raps are looking to make a run next season
