Zion for Giannis

Post#1 » by TheProfessor » Mon Apr 28, 2025 2:14 pm

NO in: Giannis
NO out: Zion, 2025 first (if outside top 1), 26, 27 pick Swaps Returned, IND 26 first, NO 2027 first.

NO gets a top 3 player in his Prime, you figure out the rest as you go along.

Milwaukee In: Zion, 2025 first (if outside top 1), 26, 27 pick Swaps Returned, IND 26 first.
Milwaukee Out: Giannis

The franchise is done, Giannis has 2 years left, Dame will be injured for the next 2 years. You get a chance to rehab an all-star or just sell for scraps to a 3rd team. Plus a strong pick in a strong draft, while also getting to control your future for the next 2 years and hopefully retool/tank in peace.

Why would the Bucks do Giannis dirty like this?

What other options do they have? NO has there picks for the next 2years and then Portland for the next 3. They went all-in For Giannis by getting Lillard, now someone has to pay the consequences.

I am not sure this works cap-wise, as I think New Orleans would have to add a ~$10M salary here (likely Olynyk). Still, this makes a ton of sense for Milwaukee given where they are contract-wise with their players. There is some risk of a Doncic-esque backlash, but Zion and a lottery pick in 2025 would generate a lot of good vibes.

I am less convinced with regards to New Orleans. They'd be quite close to the 2nd apron, and I am not sure this is a championship contender:

Missi / ??
Giannis
T Murphy / H Jones
McCollum / Hawkins
Murray/ Alvarado

Still, I can't see a way New Orleans passes.

Giannis/Kuzma for Zion/Murray/2025 1st ( assuming it #1 overall)

I don't know if this is doing him dirty, but I do think that Giannis is going to get to chose his next team if they deal him. Because they aren't Dallas dumb, they aren't trading him unless he asks for it. I think they are more than willing to Kobe or Dirk it and just let their star stay as long as he wants even past contending years.

Maybe he would choose New Orleans, but I'm struggling to find reasons why they would be at the top of a potential list.

So, Giannis brings the Bucks a championship and now he has to "pay the consequences"? I doubt they just ship their most important player of the last half century off to the a struggling franchise without consulting him. Them saying it is time to move on and asking for a list of preferred teams is more likely. Maybe the Pelicans get looped into a multi-team trade though.

Agree that this makes more sense as a three-way. New Orleans isn't the right destination for Giannis, but getting their own picks back from NO in any Giannis trade is a reasonable priority for the Bucks, the same way getting their own picks back from Houston was a priority for the Nets when they traded Bridges. And Houston is the obvious choice for the third team, as they have the assets to satisfy both Milwaukee and New Orleans. That likely means the Phoenix picks, and maybe a player, to New Orleans, then players, the Bucks picks, and additional compensation to Milwaukee. Unless, of course, the Bucks would rather have the Phoenix picks than their own, in which case the rationale for including NO disappears.
