Cavs / Rockets / Hawks / Pistons

Post#1 » by JJ_PR » Thu May 8, 2025 3:15 am

Cavs get: Tari Eason, Dyson Daniels, Reed Sheppard, Terrance Mann and '27 and '29 frp via Suns
Rockets get: Donovan Mitchell and Onyeka Okongwu
Hawks get: Alperen Sengun and Jock Landale
Pistons get: Isaac Okoro, Georges Niang and 2 2nds ('25 via Bucks, '27 via Nuggets)

Why?
Cavs add size and defense. They also save a ton of money.
Rockets add a superstar number one option and a good big man.
Hawks add a star big man who is a good fit next to Trae Young.
Pistons get some players who are familiar with Bickerstaff and some 2nds.

Pistons sending out nothing sounds lovely, except this I assume uses all of our space and we thus lose Beasley, Schroder, and (less concerning) THJ.

That doesn’t work and isn’t how we need to allocate our resources. A couple of seconds doesn’t change that.

Gonna focus on the meat of the deal and not the inconsequential pieces.

Houston is trading: Sengun, Reed, Tari, 27 and 29 for Mitchell
- Houston definitely needs a PG, but the cost here is extraordinary. Is Mitchell more impactful than Sengun? I don't view him as a "superstar"
- I could see us making this deal and then being worse next year, and less 4 major trade assets.

Atlanta is trading: Dyson, Mann, OO for Sengun.
- I could see the rationale for Atlanta, although Dyson is a darling, so I doubt they would be on board with it. If they wanted to go this route, they likely would want to bid on Sabonis at a cheaper price, who is probably a better fit with Trae (although older).

Cavs are trading: Mitchell for Tari, Dyson, Reed, 27, and 29 from Suns.
- This just seems like crazy return for Mitchell.
- You are getting some of the best off ball impact guys in the league, and then 3 highly valued extras.
- You would probably have to add Allan at minimum and even then, its still probably a tough negotiation.

Bottom line, is you have three teams all trying to win, so I don't know how you make good trade partners from that. The best trade partners are teams heading in different directions.

The Cavs are not trading Mitchell. They certainly aren't trading Mitchell for Eason, Daniels, and spare parts.

Jarret Allen isn’t winning you anything. Garland won’t show up in the playoffs. Mobley is a glorified dunk man. Mitchell has some experience but is a liability on defense. To me, the Cavs are a treadmill team.

Atlanta is sucking value.

I don't like the target for Houston at the cost of Sengun. Houston can afford acquiring a player of Mitchell's caliber without including Sengun/Amen.

Why pretend Cleveland is out of moves? They have highly sought after pieces. Worst case they can switch things up like New York/Minnesota did for a better roster fit.

Detroit is going to operate over the cap.

Impact doesn't love Daniels, box-scores does.
Sheppard isn't proven as a off-ball impact guy.
Eason is an intriguing wing with a high floor and weirdly high-level outcomes.

This is an excellent point. Rarely are more than 2 teams in a trade trying to get better this year and if that's the case their is typically a team involved willing to take a step back.

Yes, he absolutely is, and yeah, he *is* a superstar, imo.

That said, I think you're right to dislike the idea of trading Sengun for him. The move makes more sense if you're going to pair them. And y'all have enough trade assets that Sengun should be untouchable in a trade for anyone below Giannis level.

From a direction standpoint, this makes no sense for the Cavaliers. They won 64 games this year and they are simply running into bad injury luck. If they were to make a major move in the off season(not saying they should), then why not try to see if Evan Mobley + Garland+ picks is enough for Giannis.
