BOS-DAL-SAC: Revamping Mavs Roster with 2 trades

Post#1 » by aguiar95 » Fri May 9, 2025 6:29 pm

Trade 1 - BOS

DAL in: Holiday
DAL out: Thompson, Gafford

Why? DAL banks on Holiday's defense and secondary ball handling (also AD connection) to help DAL compete in the short term. BOS gets two contributors and shed long-term salary.

Trade 2 - SAC

DAL in: DeRozan
DAL out: Washington, Martin, Powell

Why? DAL gets a primary ball handler and offense creator untill Ky gets back. SAC gets a younger starter that fits better with their current core (Sabonis/Monk/Lavine).

(Irving)/TP-MLE/Williams
Holiday/Christie
DeRozan/Marshall
Davis/Prosper
Lively/#11 (Queen)

White/Pricthard
Thompson/Scheiermann
Brown/Hauser
Tatum/#28 (Yaxel)
Porzingis/Gafford

Monk/Carter
Lavine/Ellis
Murray/Martin
Washington/MLE
Sabonis/Valanciunas

The first trade needs a place for Thompson to go for expirings because right now it does not save Boston money except by Gafford expiring, and he is the more useful player to them.

I wouldn’t trade PJ for Demar personally

But if you do that, you need to get value back. And/or make Sac take on Klay and send Martin to Boston.

That at least saves Boston enough money that they could consider it?

If the OP is legal (I don’t know) then that flip would be legal. Sac has a big TPE to help with that matching.

I was going to suggest something like this.

Sac out: Demar, 2 2nds
Sac in: Martin (into TPE), Klay, Washington

Celtics out: Jrue
Celtics in: Gafford
saves them 18 million this year, a ton next if they let Gafford expire. Gafford also opens the door for them to trade KP for depth elsewhere and more savings.

Mavs out: Martin, Klay, PJ, Powell
Mavs in: Jrue, Demar, 1 2nd

4th team out: nothing
4th team in: Powell + 2nd

Yeah...my understanding is that BOS needs to shed some short-term salary - preferably without going off the rails...they probably need to be giving away guys like Hauser to cap space teams or talking to BRK for a 3-way.

BRK is everyone's 3-way...will be interesting to see how they "weaponize" that cap space. They wield a lot of power this summer.

Will Brooklyn be a salary dumping group, or will they want to keep flexibility to go all in for Giannis +.

I'm not sure they do though. There really aren't (m)any great young free agents for them to bid on and other teams realize this. Brooklyn then can't be unreasonable in asks for taking on salary or they end up just doing stupid Bruce Brown style inflated contracts.

Other teams can also take on some salary. Hauser for instance could go lots of places and lots of teams would be happy to take on a shooter on that contract.

Hauser would be easy...but if BRK wants to "help", it opens all kinds of doors for lopsided $$ trades.

I think the Mavs will pull the trigger if there's no better Gafford trade on the table.
