Spurs are not ready to contend, they're at least a year away and that's assuming everything goes right: Vic gets healthy and picks up where he left off, Castle takes a big second year leap, Sochan figures out some of his offensive woes, they hit their draft picks and free agency signings and figure out a sensible rotation, etc. Spurs shouldn´t make big, costly moves until they have clarity, otherwise it could bite them in the ass and set them back for years. Plenty of teams got overexcited and pulled the trigger way too soon, only to be left behind trying to catch up.
Spurs are a no nonsense, conservative organization, perhaps like no other in the league, yet the board treats them like they were owned by Ishbia or ran by Isaiah Thomas or Daryl Morey, trading their most prized assets for very expensive, injury prone vets well into their thirties, any value you can squeeze out of them should come in the next 2/3 years where they're unlikely to be able to capitalize on it. This makes it a strategic blunder, unless we're talking a value proposition you can't pass up on (much like it happened with Fox). So yeah, if the board just disregards the Spurs context it's no wonder pretty much every Spurs fan around is going to be against it.
