A KD to Dallas idea..
Assuming KD is a bit more valuable than Lauri. Feel like Phoenix owes Utah that 2029 first back. But I want to meet the room on KD/Lauri valuation so trying it this week.
and not spending too much time finding a home for Grayson honestly.
Delaying the trade for the draft picks to count as matching salary and Phoenix to get under the second apron.
Dallas: Gafford, Klay, PJ, Martin, Hardy, LAL first
Dallas: KD and 52
Dallas gets one of the only players in league that could make Nico’s plan work? Enough breathing room from second apron to fill bench if you get another second round pick or so and maybe use the small taxMLE on Tyus or CP when you dump Powell?. You could maybe tell me Dallas owes a swap in 2026 if there’s actually a KD bidding war? Seems unlikely.
Utah: Lauri, 43 and 52
Utah: Klay, Martin, Hardy, Niang, 22, 2029 LAL first
Utah gets two firsts for Lauri. Probably look to trade 21 and/or 22 for future picks after this.
Phoenix: KD, Grayson, 29, Oso
Phoenix: Lauri, PJ, Gafford
Phoenix better balances their roster and gets a lot younger. If KD is slightly more valuable than KD, that value mixed with 29/Oso gets PJ while Gaff/Allen is pretty close?
Atlanta: Niang and 22
Atlanta: Allen, Oso, 29, 43
Atlanta trades back in the first but adds a good 3rd guard to pair with Trae/Dyson. Oso seems like a fine third string center, add another big using MLE and run team back?

i think that return is a bit underwhelming for Utah, but i dont think as highly of LAL 2029 1st as others

Oh our Jazz fans are going to hate this.
I think even with your ignore the upside variance, assign a value of the 20's for the pick, its probably about right for his value on that deal. With the upside, I think its plenty fair.
I think Dallas is being asked to pay more than we've asked the other Texas teams though. They usually get him for Green/10 or filler/14. Dallas is giving better players and a pick while not worth as much as those, has an upside element they don't as they are already fixed.
I think its too good for Phoenix honestly and they should kick more value somewhere. I'm probably a homer on the Mavs stuff here so while it feels like Dallas to me, probably should be Utah because I also probably undervalue Lauri slightly.

i think thats what other texas' teams are offering but not what phoenix fans' will accept? they are asking for more picks/value on top of said package

I like this trade for the Suns, but I recognize that I value Markannen a bit higher than most fans.

I agree. I think they owe either the 2028 or 2029 firsts to Utah.
And if that gets Dallas a few seconds or some other additional value, even better.
But did seem really good for Phoenix to me as well. Oso inclusion was just to duck the matching rules.

And if that gets Dallas a few seconds fine
Phoenix: KD, Grayson, 29, Oso
Phoenix: Lauri, PJ, Gafford
grayson = gafford
Is PJ worth 2 late 1sts, Oso, AND the delta between KD and Lauri? seems a bit rich for PJ

I think Lauri is worth more than KD. So I don’t agree with the basis there which is why I feel Phoenix owes more.
As said in OP, I tried to build it off the idea that KD is worth more than Lauri. Which is why the value looks how it does. Meeting the room, you know.

If you can't get over the top, why are you emptying the roster? Obviously, you don't have an edge over OKC after that trade.

Re: A KD to Dallas idea..
I suspect KD can warrant much for Pheonix.. I expect something like unwanted expiring contracts and mid-1st for KD. I.e. Barnes and 14 pick. No building blocks are coming back to Pheonix at all. Gafford, PJ and a 1st is way too much for a rental at 37. Don't get me wrong. KD is a great player. But look at the teams that you're competing against. I'd rather have a deep team and draft pick. I don't think SAS is sure-fire winner after that trade. Let alone the Mavs parting with 2 starters.

If that was the actual attitude, Dallas would be tanking. And I would be happy.
But Dallas isn’t tanking and wants to win now. And AD, KD, Flagg, Christie, Kyrie closing lineups is about as good as you can hope for if you’re win now and not trading your most valuable asset…

Looks like highway robbery for Dallas. Role players and a not so valuable first round pick for Kevin Durant

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
