To be fair, I think this trade offer is coming to terms with that. Avidja is a good, young player but I don't see him ever making an all star team. I would say one good player isn't exactly a "great return" for someone who's considered a top 20ish player by a lot of parties.

That’s where the disagreement lies, then. I think Deni WILL make an all-star team or three. He continues to improve and has a true all-around game. He may (probably won’t) never reach Brown’s level in 2024, but that’s where the money comes into play. His remaining contract is so insanely cheap (3/39, no options and declining) and Brown’s is so big (4/236, standard raises), that there’s absolutely no way I’d even consider a 1-for-1 trade, or even with offloading Ayton.

I know Brown had an off-year and missed 9 more games and all, but also consider that Deni had a better OBPM, DPBM, VORP, and WS this year. For under 1/3 the salary. And Deni’s salary goes down from here.

Not even remotely close, at least to me. Welcome to the money matters era.

I don’t know if I agree about Deni making the all star team. Competition is stiff.

I think if utilized the way he is on a good team, he’d make it, but he isn’t one of those guys that will make an all-star game on stats alone even if his team is 9th seed. Put him in Boston and if they are 3rd seed, he easily could, but if he stays on a team like Portland looked this past season, he won’t get in. This is to say, he plays like a low end all-star, and those players need team records high to get in.

Deni would need to improve more to make an all-star team in the West, certainly (I’m talking reserve here, not starter), including playing more minutes (at 30 flat the last two years). But the biggest thing is only under his control to a partial extent — Portland needs to make the playoffs, build on last year, and gain respect for their players, including their best player, which is definitely Avdija.

It just works that way. I’ve read a hundred articles this season blowing smoke up Cade’s ass about his breakout year. He made 3rd team All-NBA, almost 2nd (11th in votes). You’d think he turned into a monster this year. He didn’t. His team played better. Now he was a part of that improvement, particularly his defense, but all he really did on offense was shoot a little more, convert a little better on 2’s, grab an extra board, shoot an extra free throw, and he raised his assists because the team had actual shooters. His turnovers got significantly worse, he was worse from the line. And he played 35 mpg.

Deni can definitely be an all-star averaging 20/8/5 with good defense on a playoff team. And he can definitely put up those numbers in 33 mpg.

EDIT: Myth posted a less verbose version of the same thing as I was typing this. Spot on.

This is creative, but I can't see either side wanting to do this because I think each likes their guy better.

I like Brown for Ayton Grant and filler.

I like Brown with Deni. Think those Blazers make the playoffs.

BOS would absolutely not take Grant in a Brown deal. Not many teams would consider him.

If it's Ayton Grant then Toumani and a pick or three need to be included.

No.

Keep Brown with our complements.
