I'm not a huge fan of this tbh. He passes the playable in the playoffs test, but he's not really attractive to trade partners on that deal. I get the percentage of the cap argument, I really do, it's just that when you're a tax team already, you have to squeeze those margins.

I like the deal. 10% of cap.

Lakers would be keen on a deal but don't think it happens because of history.

Not really, neither AD or Gafford can guard Wemby and Chet. I think the Mavs is in wait-and-see mode when it comes to Lively. After 2026, decision will come depends on the health and growth of Lively. With both AD and Gafford, playing time of Lively would be reasonable, if this is the case, Lively will be extended for rather reasonable amount instead of Gobert type of contract. I still see the number around 25M per if the progress on health and versatility is on path. If Lively gets All-star, DPOY, key statistical leaders (BPG, RPG, etc), then it could be more. It depends on how great the defense become and how much Lively can contribute on both end of the floor. Lively needs to become bigger presence on both end to get a great extension. I think the extension means the Mavs plan to win now this coming season but could trade AD if Kyrie walks next offseason.

Do you see who Flagg is looking to team up with right after the draft? It's DLive who's the first guy mentioned by Flagg right after the Mavs promised the 1st draft selection. Not Kyrie nor AD.

The Mavs plans to operate over the cap. I put it that way. Gafford will be paid more than 14M by many teams. I think it's fair number. Hartenstein gets similar amount. I think the level of play is similar.

At least, it's not Powell. It seems to me that Powell will retire next offseason. Both Gafford and PJ are rock solid players. You have to set examples for everyone within the organization to work hard and contribute to the teams' success. The duo puts the team into play-in a big way last season.

PJ must be heading out for a guard before the draft.

A 88M / 4 year extension has been offered, I've heard.

Yeah, that's the backdrop on all of these deals. Under this new CBA, you can't really stay under the 2nd apron if you're giving 2nd or 3rd tier stars the max and also signing these MLE+ type of guys for the lower end starters/good bench spots. I still think the league needs to find its equilibrium in terms of what that balance will be for the "value" of deals to shake out. Will the league keep paying the top of the roster all max deals and squeeze the rest of the team? Or do the lesser stars come down in price to allow for more players like this. if the former, a deal like this could end up hard to find a taker for but if it's the latter it will be valued decently IMO.

That’s the maximum extension he’s eligible for, and Stein mentioned that yesterday in his Substack. Have you seen it’s actually been offered?

Good for Gaff, would've prefered MLE to be able to dump into exception, but not that big of a deal.
Extention being setup as eligible for extend and trade is great.

54M for 3 years are just reasonable contract for Gafford.

ANd is far better and more versatile IMO. I like Gaff, he was a big part of the Finals run last year. He has energy and fight, unlike AD. My initial reaction was my misunderstanding that extending him meant we couldn't trade him for a while if a good opportunity arose. I also wish Dallas could have bargain deals like Indy has with Nesmith and Nembhart, but this is a franchise that never does. They always seem to overpay guys, even if its slightly like this.

Hate this for Dallas.

They should be clearing thier roster of vets and using cap space to facilitate other teams moves while picking up assets.

Given Dallas’ pick situation, I’d have liked this deal whether AD was traded or not.

If you turn around and trade AD and PJ, you’ve probably built a bottom 5 team for a year with a decent asset base. That’s a path forward at least.

If you refuse to trade for actual impact talent or tank… yeah it’s a terrible spot that a lot of teams are in, Dallas included.

But Gafford making 10% of the cap ages 28-30 is not the problem.. you want him running around the youth in 18 months..
