I think it makes pretty good sense for both sides.
At this point, Poole is a mild upgrade over McCollum on the court, particularly when you account for his durability. All the jokes about Poole being a terrible locker room influence are misinformed. Poole is actually a pretty good guy and a very hard worker who set a good example for the Wizards' locker room. So the Pelicans got a younger, more durable, slightly better player and it cost them nothing except another year of salary flexibility.
From the Wizards standpoint, the only problem with Poole is that he is still young enough to have career ambitions, whereas the Wizards are grooming a much younger core of Bilal, Sarr, Coulibaly, George, AJ and their two FRP's in this draft. They're better off with the almost-as-good McCollum who presumably no longer even wants to play heavy minutes, making more room for their youngsters. And, obviously, the shorter contract gives the Wizards plenty of flexibility to accommodate teams looking to trade picks for cap room. And if all else fails, the Wizards could try and be players in free agency next summer.
