I think part of the Turner thinking was that moving Mathurin is not the the hope.

Yeah I laughed out loud at that one. ESPN is transparently desperate for Giannis to force his way to a bigger market.

(also I think the phrase he was looking for is "taking out a second mortgage" to get a sports car)

Glad other people are noticing.

ESPN is the absolute worst (from what I've heard.)

Hey man I wish I could go back and find the post I made right after the Siakam trade. I said if he doesn't go else where and it takes the kind of money that he's gonna want $45 million a year to start that they will not be able to sign Turner. I know I made that post and I took a lot of BS from some of the Pacers posters but I was right.

You're not always wrong but you do tend to see the downside. As I write every year, I know I'm overly optimistic in the Summer.

Yeah remember all the talk of Indiana has a glut of too many Centers? Now they have only Tony Bradley.

I knew they had the makings of a good team last season but after the injury riddled start I expected the injuries to continue. By Feb 25 when they were all healthy and playing well I was aboard with the team having as shot at beating Boston but then it end up being the Knicks. The run was fun but I don't see 2025-26 being anything like this past season.

Think for the Pacers they don't need to panic. Stay below the tax and set up for the following season. Give Jackson a starting role, keep Jarace developing and watch Mathurin raise his value to the point this time next year they will be able to move him for significant value.

Mathurin will be an RFA this time next year. Time to move him now if that’s the hope.

Very true. Good point. May as well keep him and look for value elsewhere. They may just find value in extending Jackson long term, but coming off the injury is risky. They have a lot of options. It might just be Sheppard and/or Walker in that place.
They might actually cash in on Nembhard too if the previously mentioned guys take a jump.

Today's decision avoids the need to cash in on others.

I really think Indiana looked at the finals and said, we would rather have Toppin at half the cost annually. I can't really blame them. Turner is great, but maybe more of a rim runner is ideal for a hali led team. When they want to space 5 out, they can run Toppin/Siakam as the bigs.

They still have assets and space under the tax to go make a move for a starting center over the next 14 months.
??
Siakam/Toppin
Nesmith/Walker or Mathurin
Nembhard/Sheppard
Hali/Mcconnell

Walker Kessler? Lively? Hartenstein? Lots of guys could be available by next year.

They will not have much space under the tax. Especially if Mathurin is extended/re signs.

Mathurin would be the guy id trade. Didn't get the feeling Carlisle valued what he brings as much as others. Walker can take the backup wing spot, and scorers off the bench can be added for cheaper later.

The more I think about it, the more I have to give Milwaukee credit for again finding a way to re-invent the roster around Giannis. And I love the approach. Maximize the next few years around Giannis then figure it out.

And sure, in a few years from now you may be looking at trading Giannis entering his age 33 season with 3 years of Dame’s dead money on the books and not owning your draft for 3 years - but those sunk costs are going to come due no matter what.

So keep taking chances, give yourself a shot in the wide open east, and see what happens.
