Re: Shams: Olynyk to Spurs
The only benefit I see for Washington is that they save a few million, they are loaded at the guard position... Maybe involve the Blazers and send Wesley/Branham + SRP for R. Williams? Would that balance their rosters better? And I think the Blazers would be better off with those savings + covering the point guard position?

Makes sense for both teams. Seems like a win/win.

holmes? or was he released
Only $500K of Holmes' contract is guaranteed. He hasn't been released, but it's a good bet he will either be released or they will renegotiate a smaller salary. They're definitely not going to pay Holmes $13.5M.
I think it is only 250k guaranteed. But it doesn't matter too much. WAS roster is so imbalance right now, with too many SG/SF.
Blind guess, but with his guarantees not kicking in until 1/10/26, I would assume that Washington uses Holmes and his contract much like Detroit did with Paul Reed last year? As in, use his salary to help meet the salary floor long enough and wave him to maximize cap space midseason at the floor and re sign him for the rest of the season?

They are over the cap with him waived, way ahead of the salary floor, I'm surprised he hasn't been waived yet.

Ah, they are!
In that case, it makes sense to hold onto him in terms of additional useful salary matching for aggregation in trade. The ability to only guarantee the absolute minimum necessary for trade could prove useful. And, with the trigger date to guarantee so far into the season, there’s no rush to do anything. Could even carry him through camp.

I had Olynyk as more of a cooked salary ballast than this trade suggests.

I don't get the Spurs perspective in this at all.I thought Branham and Wesley each worth a 2nd round at least and could maybe get more minutes this year.Who is Washington targeting at C ? Rob.Williams? Who else is left to sign/trade that can start for them?

Wesley and Branham were picked 20 and 25 respectively and, after 3 years in the league, are not even rotation players. They should be considered reclamation projects with a small chance at success (maybe Wesley, if he learns to shoot which is a really, really long shot), that require playing time the Spurs can no longer give them after landing Castle, Fox and Harper in the past year. Nothing in there says they should be worth a 2nd round pick.
I think it makes sense all around:
Wizards get to take a look at them for a season while shedding some money and getting a 2nd round pick at the expense of a player who probably didn't want to be there
Spurs get a player that can actually play meaningful minutes with a skill set they actually need (shooting big) and clear the backcourt logjam and make a roster spot at the expense of a pick which is probably 58-60 and they would have sold for cash.
Olynyk gets to play meaningful minutes in a much better situation
Wesley and Branham get at least a shot at playing time they wouldn't have had in San Antonio
Pretty much no downside for anyone, it's either neutral or (slightly) positive all around.

Olynyk and Mamu isn't too far apart at this point but kornet def an upgrade on bassey
Olynyk is a much better defender/shooter than Mamu. I've always been a Mamu fan but he is a very limited player
I've barely watched Mamu, so I can't really comment on him or compare. OTOH, Olynyk I've watched quite a bit: when he started on the Piston's, whenever he played for Canada, and when he played for the Raptors -- so if Mamu's D is actually worse than Kelly Olynyk's, then Mamu should be nailed to the bench in TOR
Olynyk was a good locker room presence in both DET and TOR, and can also provide some organisation for bench units, so giving up nothing for him seems like a good deal for SAS
In a no-win argument, the first poster to Let It Go will at least retain some peace of mind
