But why would Portland give him those minutes when they have two different centers to develop?

Jarret Allen isn’t winning you anything. Garland won’t show up in the playoffs. Mobley is a glorified dunk man. Mitchell has some experience but is a liability on defense. To me, the Cavs are a treadmill team.

POR is trying to win with this roster. Yang may be a couple years away yet.

I was hoping and expecting this to be one of the first replies. You did not disappoint. Jroy have it all.

Ideally, Portland would love to see Yang have a redshirt season for he could use some time adjusting
to a new country and learning English.

Gives him some practice time with coach Splitter and minutes on the G league team which will help later
in the season when TL invariably gets hurt

Clingan is good for 24-30 minutes, but will have some nights where he is in foul trouble. I don't think Yang will play big minutes and will pick up a lot of fouls. That's why Portland needs a third center because they will likely play most nights. It probably won't be big minutes (I pray)

Williams is more valuable to Portland as future expiring than a dump
Somewhere trying not to offend Texas Chuck.

You said it yourself, the Hornets give up nothing for hopefully a productive center. That hope alone means Cha owes
