Chicago Washington

Figured I'd beat the rush and post a couple of Tyrus Thomas trades. The Wizards aren't exceptionally interested in him, as we've already got some young talent up front, but he undeniably brings a level of athleticism at the PF position that we don't have.

So here are my thoughts:

1: Antawn Jamison, Darius Songaila, and Etan Thomas for Ben Wallace, Viktor Khryapa, Adrian Griffin, and Tyrus Thomas.

Jamison is a huge expiring, an excellent offensive player, and a solid rebounder, on course for another all star appearance. His defense has improved this year, a pleasant surprise for a guy on the wrong side of 30. His shifty, effective interior game would provide a semblance of an offensive paint presence. He would look quite good beside Noah, and the Bulls would be the front runners in resigning him at a reduced rate over the summer.

Etan Thomas is to mitigate some of the increased salary taken on by the Wizards. It looks like he's going to be coming back soon; if he regains last year's productivity, he'd be better than Wallace this year. Songaila, Khryapa, and Griffin are there for a bit more salary balance and to ease some of the logjam on the Wizards front court.

Hinrich/Gordon/Deng/Jamison/Noah

The Wizards would basically be giving up on the year with this trade, basically taking a mulligan on the last decade, with a new iteration of Rasheed/Webber/Howard. Thomas/Blatche/Pecherov -- neither of the three is likely to meet the career effectiveness of their predecessors, but each has potential in spades. If we start losing (ie, if Daniels nagging knee injury looks to require surgery, or Butler goes down, and Arenas can't come back at 100%), I might just pull the trigger on this.

Wallace and Haywood certainly wouldn't work very well together in the front court, and I don't know how well Wallace would tolerate being Haywood's backup, but worst case scenario he can always be flipped for a similarly bad contract.

The wildcard is if Arenas would refuse to resign without Jamison. He's hinted at that in the past, so he would need to sign off on the trade.

I'm sure my fellow Wiz fans won't agree with me here, but old habits die hard, and I haven't been a huge Jamison fan for years.

2: Songaila, Young, Memphis #1 for Thomas, Khryapa.

This one is more appropriate in scale, and makes more sense. Young is a big, talented scorer, with superstar level athleticism. He's got potential to be a very good scorer.

It's certainly not a bad trade, but to be honest I don't think that the Bulls are shopping Thomas more than anyone else. Bucher seemed to pull that out of his butt today. He basically said: Bulls need to make a trade, Thomas isn't playing too much, and put the two thoughts together. Boylan won't be back, Paxson will find someone who will play Thomas. I'm pretty sure that he's high on Thomas still and wouldn't want to trade a guy who was basically the second pick, this early in his career.

Jamison is good and would help the Bulls, but he'd be a FA this season. Going into the offseason with Deng, Gordon, and Jamison would be a headache. I don't know if the Bulls would trade Thomas for a guy who could easily walk away in a few months.

Good idea though, it's definitely worth some thought.

Very bad IMO.

I don't like either trade because I simply do not like Tyrus Thomas. He's brings nothing to the table that we don't already get from Blatche, and Thomas is not skilled enough to play forward in our offense.

Ben Wallace is simply not worth a good player/expiring contract in Jamison. I laughed when you asserted that Wallace could be traded for an equally bad contract - why trade for him in the first place if you already know he's going to suck and have to be traded? Might as well let Jamison walk for nothing than absorb that albatross.

I do not think Tyrus Thomas can replace a guy like Jamison in the lineup. And if you are starting Wallace, how bad is the frontcourt scoring with Wallace and Haywood together?

Chicago and Washington are bad trading partners. There is no Tyrus Thomas to Washington trade that makes any sense at all for either team.
