Wizards-Clips; Big Gamble, Big Rewards?

Currently the Wizards are the 4 seed in the East w/o Arenas, and are actually playing better ball minus Agent 0. And the Clips are basically playing out the string in January, no less. The deal i propose would be a huge gamble on the Wizard's part but could make them a challenger to the Celtics and Pistons in the East. Brace yourself bullet fans.

Washington deals:
Gilbert Arenas-G
Nick Young-G

for

Sam Cassell-PG
Corey Maggette-G/F
Al Thornton-F
#1 pick('08 top 5 protection, '09 top 3 prot., '10 no protection)
*Current draft position is #7

Why for Wash:
The Wizards are the 4th seed in the East w/ a backcourt of Antonio Daniels and Deshawn Stevenson. An upgrade to Cassell and Maggette could make the difference between a possible title run and 1 and done playoffs. Although, Arenas is capable shooting the Wiz through a round or two, but he can also shoot them clear out of the playoffs trying to prove his value in an injury-shortened contract year.

Cassell/Daniels/Mason
Maggette/Stevenson
Butler/Songalia/Thornton
Jamison/Blatche/Thornton
Haywood/Thomas(when he comes back)/Pecherov

I think this roster could push Boston's big 3 in a best of 7, and win.

Why for LA:
Both Cassell and Maggette are free agents to be, and probably won't be back on the court for the Clips next season. Cassell wants to play for a contender as his career is finishing up, and, truth be told, Maggette doesn't want to play Dunleavy any long than he has to. Losing Thornton would be tough, but, in essence, he amounts to a second #1 pick going to Wash. There is a risk involved w/ trading for a player who is going to be a free agent, and the player being injured doesn't make it any easier. But the Clips more than likely would have pursued Arenas in the off-season. Thus, with this trade they buy themselves a couple of months and more room under the cap(being able to pay Arenas more than another club) to negotiate a max-extension. Nick Young makes the salaries balance out, and was a consideration for the Clips in this year's draft and would step right in and be the replacement for Maggette. The protection on the pick are just to cover Clips should they win the lottery, or if Arenas bolts. The '09 protection is pretty negligible if Arenas re-signs. Also, w/ Arenas in the fold Brand should be more apt to want to stay. The line-up when everyone is healthy would look something like this:

Arenas/Livingston/Knight
Mobley/Young/Ross(maybe OJ Mayo @SG in '09 if they pick 5th or better
Thomas/Young
Brand/Thomas/Powell
Kaman/Davis/Williams

Not even close, imo. It's not fair value and not a good fit. Maggette is more F than G, and the Wiz offense requires both guards to share PG duties. You're basically adding 2 SFs to a team that has Caron Butler. Meanwhile, you're dooming them to stay with a Daniels/Stevenson backcourt - but neither is much of a scorer.

Nope. Why would we want Thornton and Maggette? Do you not realize we already have a pretty good one in Caron Butler?

And i'm not sure if washington still runs the princeton offense, and whether you need 2 pg's, but i no you need cutters, slashers, and shooters, whether they be guards, forwards, or under-sized forwards who have played the 2. And Cassell is a better shooter and point option than Daniels and Maggette is a better wing/slasher than Stevenson. An upgrade is still an upgrade, even if you have to adjust your system to do it.

I'm with Ruz on this one: terrible for the Wizards in both the talent discrepancy department and with actually acquiring players who would make good fits. The least that could be done would make the pick unprotected, and even then, it's not close.

Cassell is 38 years old, not exactly a great range shooter, and might retire after this season. His value would be as an expiring contract. Washington does run a modified Princeton, and I think Maggette fits as a forward; not a guard; in that offense.

Makes alot more sense, but we would need a backup center, so I wouldn't move Blatche in this package.

upgrade? Even leaving Arenas out of it, not sure Maggette is an upgrade over Nick Young, he's been in the league a while now and hasn't showed much court intelligence to go with his undoubted athleticism.
