That wasn't a Pacers fan that said it. He is not untouchable whatsoever, we just don't think we will get 100%+ value for him. He is also loved by Pacer fans. I may trade him for a first round pick to a contender (Detroit? SA?). Idk, maybe other fans want more. But that Lakers offer was pretty awful. And we don't need to trade him for an expiring when he has one of the best contracts in the league.
the spurs would love to have foster. he isnt the shot blocker that they would like to pair with duncan, but he is a good hustle player (pop loves guys like that) and a great rebounder (something the spurs are in dire need of), and even has the hometown boy thing going for him.
problem is, the spurs dont have many assets that they could/would trade. most every player has a role on this team, and i dont think pop and rc are going to risk shaking thing up too much or trade away potential assets. the best the spurs would probably offer is:
jeff foster
for
francisco elson
robert horry
2008 1st round pick
cash
future considerations (2nd round pick)
on the condition the money being sent goes toward a buyout of horry so he could return to the spurs after 30 days. but these deals never happen (at least, i cant think of any recently), plus they become even more complicated when you figure in waivers, potential cost to the spurs in taxes, the fact that the pacers arent getting great value (essentially expirings + 1st round pick), ect...
in the end, while i bet the spurs would love to get their hands on foster, im not sure they have the pieces to swing it, while not disrupting the team/rotation, being pushed above the luxury line (which the spurs are less than 100k from iirc), or having to part with assets they would rather hold on to (splitter and ian).
