Kings/Raptors

Post#1 » by sackings916 » Wed Jan 23, 2008 11:12 am

Kings deal-
John Salmons
Kenny Thomas
Beno Udrih

Raptors deal-
Jose Calderon
Joey Graham
Jorge Garbajosa
Juan Dixon

Kings new lineup-
Bibby/Calderon
Martin/Douby/Jones
Artest/Garcia/Graham
Moore/Williams
Miller/Hawes

Why for Kings- Kings decide to commit to Artest long term and deal Salmons. Get a young PG in Calderon who can come off the bench or start if Bibby is dealt.

Raptors new lineup-
Ford/Udrih
Parker/Kapono/Delfino
Salmons/Moon
Bosh/Humphries/Thomas
Bargani/Nesterovic

Why for Raps- Upgrade their SF with versatile/slashing Salmons for a slight downgrade from Calderon to Udrih. They take Thomas deal but he can provide depth and athleticism in the frontcourt. If Ford can get healthy a Ford,Salmons and Bosh trio with good role players and a solid bench may be enough to take the Raptors to the next level.

You have a flair for understatement, sir.

Udrih is a better shooter and scorer IMO, while Calderon is a better playmaker and more of a pure point guard, but Udrih is decent in that area also. Also Calderon is a much bigger defensive liability than Udrih. Udrih is decent on the ball and has good anticipation in the passing lanes, and above average speed for someone his size (6-3 200+).

Why do the Raptors give up more value and take on the ugly long term contract of Kenny Thomas?

Yeah...not even close to good for Toronto. Calderon is playing out of his mind, and you want them to take on Kenny Thomas too, all for a guy that spurned them in FA? I don't think so.

A few things...first, Calderon is also 6'3", 210, so we wouldn't be upgrading in size.

Udrih may have solid anticipation in the passing lanes, but so does Calderon; their per/40 steals numbers are not far apart.

And finally, Udrih being a better scorer depends on what you're looking for:

Udrih takes a shot every 2.9 minutes, and scores 16 pts/40 with a TS% of .532.

Calderon takes a shot every 3.4 minutes, scores 15.2 pts/40 with a TS% of .591. So Calderon is a much more efficient and accurate scorer...Udrih just takes more.

And the difference between their point guard abilities is massive. Calderon leads the league in assist rate; Udrih is 35th. Calderon has the 14th best turnover rate of any player in the league...Udrih is 135th. That's a huge dropoff.

And while Salmons looks very good, the idea of taking a large downgrade at PG and taking back Kenny Thomas' contract to get him is far too high a price, not to mention whether Salmons would actually be happy in Toronto. Not a terrible deal for the Raptors by any means, but Toronto passes nonetheless.

Yeah Salmons had a revlation of sorts according to him, he told his agent that God told him Toronto isn't the team for him ! Why would he then agree to be traded here?

The Kings take this and run far away with this. The Raptors get screwed out of a potential allstar this year. Beno is nowhere near as good as Calderon. Beno is having one good year and is looking to get seriously paied. Calderon has done what he's doing year after year with Tau, as a backup last year and in the FIBA championship.

We are not touching Kenny Thomas' horrid deal he's among the worst PER players in the league hands down. He's contract is wayyyyyyyy too long and for wayyyyyyyyy too much money. Give us your first this year and it's a done deal. As in the OP post he has us with Thomas as a 3rd PF in his projected DC why the **** would we want that? The guys making what $7-$8 million per year? Toronto gets wayyyyyyyy too much salary in the deal and cripples our cap and future plans for anything.
