Regardless, if you think this recent concoction of the Suns team and their high powered offense is but a small blip in the grand scheme of things - you're trippin' .......... The excitement it brought to the NBA and the blueprint it provided for many other teams trying to emulate their style is quite obvious. Nobody is emulating the Hawks.

JJ won for now. If Diaw plays to his potential as he did last yr...then its a draw. People can holler about Doris all they want, he is still an effective back up pf/c who can slide to sf. The jury is still out on this...atleast until draft day. And as others have said...the manuevers of Phnx's Front Orfice in the post JJ era are indeed separate...but have been less than steller.

Essentially it was JJ for Bell/Diaw/3mill/and #15 That is the net result to date.

I don't get trading Joe Johnson as to not overpay him by then overpaying Boris Diaw. That makes no sense to me.

I think both teams won.

ATL got their 2 time all-star. PHX got a decent guy back in Diaw, don't remember what was done with the pick but probably mismanaged but they kept themselves below lux tax by trading JJ away.

It is very close minded to consider a championship as the only barometer for team success. Just to put it in perspective; only the Spurs, Lakers, Pistons, and Heat have won it all since the Jordan era. To say that no other team has been relevant during this decade is not true.

I guarentee that Suns fans would not give up the excitment and deep playoff runs that they have enjoyed for anything. As a Heat fan I know how great it is to feel like you really have a contender (whether you win it or not). I also know how painful and futile it can feel to sit through a season where you know you are going nowhere.

Yes the Suns will not only be remembered as an atypical team that didnt win the big one, but also as an exciting team that changed the league.

Do we have to bring this up every single year? Joe Johnson WANTED to leave and could've left the Suns for NOTHING. The fact that Phoenix got a player and picks for him were BONUS. There's no question that Phoenix would be better off with Joe but Joe didn't want to stay, he wanted Atlanta where he can be the main guy. End of story.

wigglestrue wrote:The deal in question did not require Phoenix to sign Diaw to an extension, that was a separate move. And whether Phoenix was bluffing is crucial to judging the trade, because if Phoenix was bluffing then Atlanta got suckered into giving up assets in order to sign a FA who would've been theirs anyway.

We are judging the ACTUAL trade, not "what ifs". We are judging the actual trade as it has played out.

There was a 50/50 shot that PHX wouldn't have matched. I'm an Atlanta fan and I wouldn't want to risk a 50% chance of not having JJ in order to have kept Diaw (who didn't even try in ATL) and 2 late firsts. Sorry.

The trade was Diaw and 2 late firsts for JJ. That's the ONLY measure for this thread. The answer to the question should be simple.

That was really difficult for you to type, I know.

Joe Johnson for Boris Diaw and Robin Lopez? LOL, Hawks won easily.

The Suns need changes at the top; their penny-pinching ways have forced them to trade/sell away way too much talent (Rajon Rondo, Sergio Rodriguez, Rudy Fernandez, Nate Robinson, Luol Deng, James Jones, Kurt Thomas, etc).

Joe Johnson < Jason Richardson + Robin Lopez + Rajon Rondo

The Suns didn't get to keep Rondo though, so he's kind of a non-factor in the analysis of this one.

Atlanta clearly won the trade. The got one of the top young players in the league and while it was a questionable decision to leave the pick unprotected, it clearly worked out in Atlanta's favor.
