Re: Giannis is gone: Mavs Next Target
Gobert makes sense for the Mavs because he brings up their defense while being an efficient scorer in his own right.
SnT of KP and Powell for Gobert and a piece or two would be clean.
Would Mavs want Bojan, Ingles or O'Neale?

Dallas should like any of those players. But cleaner still is to trade KP elsewhere and just sign Gobert. No reason to limit the KP trade options to just the Jazz unless the Jazz really make it worth their while.
Or just keep both. I prefer KP at center, but he'd only have to play 12-15 mpg in the RS at PF which is totally fine. Because just Luka/Gobert is a similar issue--you are basically saying Luka can do Lebron/Dirk type lone star things except do it as a baby. That's a ton to ask.
Dallas needs 2 other top 40 players along with Luka imo.

I think Dallas sticks with KP, and really cant see Cuban deciding to sell him off.
Ideally Dallas gets to a point where they have a backup who can split minutes with KP. Something like 24 / 24 and then you keep Zinger healthy for a 30-32mpg type average during the playoff run.
I think bringing LMA back on the cheap (Room MLE?) next offseason to be the abovementioned minute split guy would be ideal.

Problem with Mavs clearing cap to sign Gobert in FA is they have to let go of J-Rich, THJ, WCS, Boban in the process plus you don't get the extra player and picks Jazz throw in to get KP instead of losing Gobert for nothing. Could they trade KP for a better haul than this? I find it unlikely.
I'm not sure if Luka needs 2 top 40 guys. What if he had a top 25 in Gobert and then 6 top 100 guys? THJ, Fournier, Ingles, J-Rich, DFS, Kleber

Reports that Gobert is open to less than a max to extend with Utah might make him moot for Dallas as well.

Would Derozan work for them? Maybe Oladipo or Fournier?

Aaron Gordon if ORL decides it’s time to move on.
The whole boat except Luka / KP for Simmons if HOU doesn’t want to keep him in a Harden deal
I think you are undervaluing what these teams think of their players. Gordon as a salary dump only works if they can move Vuc as well. Otherwise it makes no sense.
I didn’t even make an offer for Gordon

Surely KPs best position is center? Doesn't make sense to me to get a center like Gobert that will play 35 mins there.

Mavs don't have any assets to trade for Harden but I could see them getting involved as a facilitator due to all their expiring contracts.

Yeah some of these names either don't make sense (Kemba or Oladipo due to injury concerns) or fit (Gobert). Not sure who the right guy would be, and as others have chimed in, KP's health and as a result trade value, really throws a wrench in to all of it.

What's interesting is they have not come to an agreement. According to what I just read the Jazz can offer him the regular max which is 4 years and 148 million. Next season competing teams can offer him 4 years at 145 million.
I wonder who is hehawing around here. Is it the Jazz not putting 148 on the table? Or is Gobert thinking about having a pick of destinations and taking 145?

I’m pretty confident in saying that the Mavs are trying to be that 3rd team in the Harden talks.

Basis?
And what do the Mavs have that Houston wants?

They don’t have the pieces to trade for Harden straight up. That’s why I don’t think he’s their target. They are just trying to be part of the deal in order to obtain an asset or a player that could help them.

Right. I get Dallas doesn't have the assets for Harden plus he and Luka would just be wonky. But for Dallas to be a 3rd team that means they have to have something Houston wants. I'm struggling to see what that would be exactly other than potentially KP who I don't think is on the table.

Ya, I dont really see any benefit for HOU or PHI in getting Dallas involved.
Dallas doesnt have the assets for Harden or Simmons, so what would their role in the deal be? I mean, maybe something like Tucker for Powell and a FRP but that could be a totally seperate deal to begin with.
Adding the toughness and playoff experience of Tucker while clearing more cap space would be huge for Dallas. Tucker + Johnson totally transforms their prior lack of grit.

Even though the Hawks have a good history with Houston, I don't see Atlanta being involved. My best guess would be New York with their available cap space as a 3rd team.

I could see that, but it would be foolish IMO to dilute Harden's value by getting a under-the-cap team to take spare parts and assets for savings on HOU's end. Then again, their owner is cheap and heavily in the service industry so he must be hurting.
