Cavs aren't trading an 21 year old all star game starter for a pick with ANY protection.

The other guys in the top 5 were -
Kobe, LBJ, Melo, Howard (since then Davis took the #1 spot)

So that's pretty good company... he looked untradable in the best sense of the word.

Since then he has struggled with health and hasn't gotten much better and his stock has dropped. But, in fairness to him, he's still very impressive for his age and has been saddled with a bad franchise.

His value is still huge. If I had to put money on the PG, other Chris Paul, most likely to be a top 5 player in the NBA, it would be Irving, although it's a long shot.

His trade value is also still high because you have RFA control over him. So, in a vacum, I think you've still got to consider him a huge value that probably takes two blue chippers... like and unprotected pick from a high lotto team in the 2014 draft + a really good young player still on rookie scale.

But if he's pressuring his way out of Cleveland, he's probably going to give a short list of teams he'd be happy with and it would be hard to get full value out of other teams. If he wants to go to LA or NY and no where else, he could make it pretty hard for Cleveland to get value.

That last scenario would probably backfire on Kyrie. If the Cavs can't get good value for him, then I could see Gilbert telling him to play on the tender offer for a year and hope he doesn't get hurt.

Magic and maybe lakers are the best options. Anything short of top 6 2014 1st+ Another 1st + jack's contract should not be offered or laughed at.

he gets it. Kyrie is going to be on a team for at least five more years. He won't pass up his max extension.

Otto Porter & Eric Maynor for Irving.

Kyrie can be Wall's backup.

The Cavs have no reason to trade Irving mainly because they are not going to get fair value and unless they get a top 4 pick aren't getting a player back with his potential, which is still certainly there.

At the same time I think it's important to look at why they would not get fair value

A. PG is a completely saturated position. While it might sound like a stretch to call Kyrie a slightly above average starting PG, it's not a stretch to call Deron Williams a below average PG and many thought that would have been blasphemous a year or two ago. Much of that is on D.Will but a large part is on the continued influx of PGs in the league. MCW, Burke this year, Exum and Smart coming up. This is the era of PGs in the NBA and yet PGs like Fisher, Chalmers, old as dirt Kidd, have rings as role players.

B. With the supply of PGs up and subsequently the demand low, the impact a PG has relative to his competitors is lower. Would a team rather have a player at a position they know offers a clear advantage over most their opponents or one that offers a marginal advantage?

C. Has Kyrie made his team or others around him better?
Since drafting Irving the Cavs remain a lotto team with roughly the same winning % despite having top picks to add to the team and the team trying to win. Theyve drafted Waiters, Thompson, Bennett, Zeller and Karasev. Of those I can't think of a single one who's shown growth and chemistry playing with Irving. Waiters fueds with him and Bennett has been one of the most disappointing #1s in recent memory.

D. Is Kyrie a scoring PG or passing PG?
He scores about 21 points over game but it is on 19+ shots per game. He has the ball plenty, yet only manages roughly 6 assists per game. His FG% and 3FG% has dropped every season to where he is shooting 43%/35%..down from 47/40 as a rookie. His rebounding has gone down as well.

E. He is going to expect a 5 year franchise max contract after next season.
Again with so many PGs with comparable production I would be hesitant to offer them that.

F. Defensively he needs to improve dramatically.
Opposing PGs out up a PER of 18.7 against him and the Cavs allow 7 less points per game when he is off the court and a much lower effective field goal percentage. His struggles on defense have long been documented and don't seem to be improving. If he is going to continue to be a score first PG I think he need to at least be like RW and Rose and elevate his D....significantly.

Overall I'm shocked by some of the offers being made for Irving. I don't think some GMs would actually make them, but at the same time I know Cleveland has too much riding on Irving to move on him so soon. No matter what he is still their most talented player by a long shot, though hopefully that changes after this draft.

I agree. I think he's tanking (and I don't mean to land the Cavs a high pick)...

and either another first in the future or we can take one of your contracts for RJ, Biedrins, or Marv.

Considering if Jazz get Irving will be locked to #11-#13 in the draft lottery, which means very few chances to go into the top3, I would say Yes, please.

One word: Allstar! (Jazz are starving for it)

Cavs aren't trading an 21 year old all star game starter for a pick with ANY protection.

They're not. They're trading him for Oladipo, a VERY lightly protected 1st, a Jack salary dump, Mo Harkless and a large expiring contract that gets paid by insurance.

So what kind of offers would Irving get now?

Just curious as to how much his stock has dropped over the years. I proposed trading him 2 years ago as a Cavs fan and was basically told I was crazy. And that the package I offered was way too little.

What would be some offers today?

I don't think he has as much value right now as he did this time last year. I'm not saying he is who he is and can't improve, but his numbers have stagnated for the 4th year in a row and he still isn't really playing winning basketball. Plus, he now has a max-level extension.

Still think he is valuable, but Cleveland would probably be best off just hanging onto him. Doubt you can get a better win-now piece than Irving and it's pretty clear that they will win or flame out with the roster they have now. Doesn't make sense to try to acquire rebuilding assets at this point.

Much Rather have Kemba Walker.. Only because he's healthier and also can score as good as Irving

Yeah, I think Walker's current run has made some people delusional. I'm a Celtics fan and even I can admit that Irving is a top five pg.

I do't think there is any way in hell they are moving him, but I would offer up Smart, C's first next year, and maybe Bradley or a filler plus a Brooklyn pick for him.

I don't really see the need to bump this thread.

Cleveland isn't looking to deal him so no point in this really.
