Wow, that seems like highway robbery in plain daylight by Utah.

Unfortunately, that wasn't an option because Ainge is more concerned with trying to win every single deal than just getting the deal done. He tried to strong-arm Kessler into a terrible deal, and when he wouldn't agree he dealt him for more picks.

It could have been a trade now and it wouldn't have been bad.

Lakers get Kessler SnT
Jazz get Vando, Ayton, LaRavia, 2 FRP, 2 swaps

Lakers stay above cap. Retain a combination of Smart, Kennard, Rui, LeBron.
Add Grimes using MLE.

Smart 6, Reaves 41, Luka 50, LeBron 30, Kessler 30
Kennard 6, Grimes 14, Carr 3, Rui 14, Hayes 2
Bronny 2, Adou 2, Knecht 4, Kleber 2, Love 2

The Jaylen Brown trade went down like a nice shot of whiskey to ease the pain from Pelinka getting mugged.

I think getting an additional playoffs with him on the roster, and at his rookie salary, meaningfully changes the value for the Lakers. But, yeah, not wholly unfair way to characterize Ainge's wheeling and dealing

In hindsight would it have made more sense to offer Kessler $150-160m instead of $130m if it meant they wouldn’t have had to trade multiple assets?

The amount of the contract is not why it cost assets to acquire.

If Utah wouldn’t haven’t matched that contract, then yeah that’s better than paying all the draft capital LAL did.

Even if there was a larger number that only cost the swaps, sure probably would’ve done it.

LA should be willing to spend to/above first apron during Luka’s run, just under second apron.. 4-5 mil more a season going to Kessler, but you have the assets to turn Vando into a good starter..

It was the amount that Utah was willing to let him go for as long as they got assets. Would they have matched it without getting assets if it were $20-30m higher?

than most likely Lakers would have had to wait for Jazz to make their minds 48 hours I believe it was and than Lakers wouldn't have been able to get any of the free agents they signed, don't think either team really wanted to do that and Kessler probably just said I'm playing for QO to the Jazz and decided to trade him with Lakers offer as no other team was offering that and for the Lakers side of things only other option was Duren and that's still going with the Pistons him wanting $170m ish, which is why Lakers went away I believe, despite working Duren out twice - oh and Pistons said they don't want to sign n trade to Lakers will match.

So glad Kessler is a Laker, can't wait for new season :)

Up the offer and make Utah call your bluff. You want 3 bigs, none of which are superstars, taking up 80% of your cap? By all means.

Trades exist.

They could put any or all of the three on the market and get picks.

Right. Make them call your bluff and trade their expensive bigs in the 48 you have to match Kessler’s offer sheet.

Um, you don't have to trade one within the 48 hours....

48 hours is for them to first match Kessler offer.
They can then trade anytime they want to redistribute the salary cost across their roster.
