I am hoping he comes back for our room exception on a 2yr contract. Likely he is looking for more playing time on a 1yr though.

Then sign an offer. Him and his agent have been a bit dramatic.
I completely believe the report that the Bulls said "They can have him."
He should have been in the Derozen deal instead of Thad, who was important to the locker room and close with Zach. Frustrating.

Am I the only one who sees Markkanen not returning much of anything in a sign and trade? Especially because I doubt they want to take back a bunch of salary and probably wouldn't match offer sheets at the MLE

No that's my expectation as well. I really want Dallas to take a flier now that his price has clearly come down plus he said he wanted to come here so I think they could get a decent deal.
And I was willing to offer up Maxi, a player Chicago could really use to make it happen. But I think now, I'd use the jayjaysee Powell/Favors deal and send Chicago maybe a 2nd round pick or Tyrell Terry or Artis Gilmore or something and keep Maxi. They don't have to take any money and just wash their hands of him.

Yeah maxi certainly feels like an overpay given how things have broken down.
My idea for my team was House and a big tpe to Chicago since they're thin at the wing, Markkanen to Houston on a deal > MLE, incentive and Olynyk S&T to Detroit

No you are not, I really thought Charlotte would offer a young big with a 2nd or something and get it done. It makes sense for them to get some cheaper young guys then just allow lauri to walk.
And this idea that they are holding out for a better return or sign him to make him a trade asset. You want to be “you get putting him on the bench and a full season of nikola is going to kill any remaining value, right?” They either need to move on or hope he signs the qualifying offer and move on after this season.

Yeah I like that idea. House could definitely help Chicago and Markkanen makes sense for Houston and you are getting him a paycheck bigger than the MLE which he should probably consider a win now.
My only concern on any of this is what his minimum ask would be to sign a multiyear deal versus just playing out the QO or taking a 1+PO for somebody's MLE. I'd go as high as 4/$60M though I'd prefer 3 years and for a bit less. But if that's what it took I'm willing to gamble.

I think the market and by virtue the people have spoken, and Lauri does not have much value, I wouldnt trade Maxi for him. The most I'd do for Dallas is WCS and Burke.

If he was willing to come to Cleveland on a 1+PO MLE as a back-up stretch PF I'd easily give him that. Not sure what we'd have to send to Chicago, probably at most a 2nd or 2 since he doesn't want to be there anyways, but man the Cavs could use a shooter like that. Heck if he could even play some minutes at SF could you imagine an line-up with 3 7' footers in a big line-up?

Re: Thoughts in General, Rumors, etc 3.0
Some notes from Stein:
Looks like Dragic may stay with Toronto--at least initially. They have so far rebuffed offers for him with Dallas named as a team trying. No plans on buying him out.
Other teams seem to think Dennis might take a one year deal with OKC for something over the MLE.
Lakers don't seem super interested in extending Vogel. Stein also notes they haven't extended a head coach since Jackson 15 years ago.
Paul not sure if he will run again to be head of the PA. CJ mentioned as a potential successor.
