Not really. Without Meeks the only viable shooting guard on the roster is Caldwell-Pope who isn't a solid starter yet himself. Jodie is the best free throw shooter on the team too and has a knack at drawing shooting fouls. I would be pretty surprised if Van Gundy wanted to move him considering all that and they still sorely lack shooting even with him. The deal Trader Joe proposed would be fine if they took a power forward in the draft. If not that wouldn't leave them with much/any room to make a move there in free agency. That's just as big of a need as small forward assuming monroe is signing elsewhere like most expect.

Sloppy train of thought here..

But what about tying the trade into a Monroe sign and trade? Is that legal? As in can Monroe+Meeks equal Joe's salary? Cause Monroe isn't getting 18 million a year...

I just don't know if the idea is Det values JOE or if Det values turning Butler+Meeks into Joe. I think it's both...

With a Monroe S&T a lot more options open.. Brooklyn eats the 8-15 mil in dead salary and Det gets whatever asset that team offers or maybe they are just happy turning Meeks into Joe? Felton/Meeks swap should be added in any/all variations though.. Please.

The Pistons don't want Felton. Especially for Meeks, that would terrible. If it came to trading Jennings they have Dinwiddie in-line as the backup point guard.

Frankly, I'm not sure the underlying premise of the trade has any merit. I know there were some rumors, but why would the Pistons want Joe Johnson in the first place? Unless SVG falls in love with a PF, we're probably drafting a SF/SG with the 8th pick. I know the guy probably won't start from Day One, but having Joe Johnson block his development for a year doesn't seem smart.

I do get that JJ is expiring and Meeks is not, but no one that likes the trade from the Nets side will take Meeks anyway. Everyone else mentioned is either expiring or a TO (Jennings, Tolliver -- who we like, and Butler), so there's no advantage there, either.

The only argument that makes any sense is to get the team playoff experience, but I'm not sure getting Joe Johnson moves the needle that much anyway. The team is going to be all kinds of Jackson/Drummond P&R's on offense, along with drives and kicks to shooters. I get that Joe is a shooter, but can't we get that a lot cheaper from someone without his pedigree (and contract)?

Meeks really wasn't that bad last year. Really need his shooting off the bench. It's going to take more than Raymond Felton for me to want to move him.

you wouldn't get Felton in my scenario. You'd get JJ. Nets would get Felton since they don't want Meeks money.

To Nets: Jennings, Shawne Williams, Martin, Butler, Felton --- Nets save 4.5M in 2015-2016

To Dallas: Meeks ---- Dallas somehow turns Raymond Felton into Jodie Meeks

To Detroit: Joe Johnson --- Pistons make their team an instant contender in the East and possible landing spot for a big PF.

Maybe the Pistons can convince LaMarcus Aldridge to sign. That team is good enough to make a run at the ECF in year one and then after that Johnson's contract expires and the Pistons can sign a premier SF.

Jackson/KCP and Aldridge/Drummond would be hard to contend with.

Sign Wes Johnson and Gerald Green to come off the bench.

Reggie Jackson / Dinwiddie
KCP / Green
Joe Johnson / Wes Johnson
Aldridge / Tolliver
Drummond / ------------

That makes more sense, but I still disagree with the notion that Detroit wants to move Meeks. I'm not telling you he's untouchable, but I don't think moving Meeks is a front office goal this offseason. He and Tolliver bot have defined roles that need to be filled if they're moved.
