Re: Cap Space What If Scenarios
If the NBA were to repeal the CBA, the Cavs would have some cap space.

How did this add to discussion at all? And it wasn't funny either. Beyond that, if the NBA dumped the CBA, the Lakers and Knicks would sign everyone to whatever they wanted.

Failed attempt at humor I guess.

Re: Cap Space What If Scenarios
In this hypothetical where J.R. Smith opts in:
I come up with the Nets actually creating cap space worth $25,836,640 using a $68 Million salary cap.
Including their remaining 8 players under contract, Joe Harris's contract, the 29th Overall Draft Pick, J.R. Smith's full salary stretched over 3 years and 3 cap holds (13 roster spots - (8 players + Joe Harris + 29th Overall Pick)).
I think this would be huge for the Nets if they could pull some kind of deal like that for Johnson followed by a deal where they dump most of Jarrett Jack's salary.

I get a decent amount of requests through posts, PMs and whatnot asking "What if Team X did....? Where does that leave their Cap space?" I miss some when I'm not quoted or they are buried in a thread.
I am happy to run these, but I ask that you post them in this thread. And please be reasonable. I don't want to run a bunch of stuff that involves 25 crazy moves. And, above else, have patience. I'll get to them, but it might take a bit.
My thought is post in this thread something like "If the Knicks stretched Calderon and traded Hardaway without taking back salary, where does that leave them?" I will then quote you with a response.
Does that work for all? I'm open to suggestions as well. Thanks everyone for your continued interest and support!
Okay, the Lakers want to maximize their 2016 cap space and don't want to miss out on a talent like DeMarcus Cousins.
They agree to this deal on draft night knowing it can't be official until July 1st:
Lakers get:
DeMarcus Cousins
David Lee
Warriors get:
Carl Landry
34th Overall Draft Pick
Kings get:
Julius Randle
Jordan Clarkson
2nd Overall Draft Pick
27th Overall Draft Pick
30th Overall Draft Pick
A.) Do they have the cap space to even make this deal in the first place?
B.) Do they have any remaining cap space after this? If so, how much?

Sorry, but right now I don't have the time to do it. Maybe in August or September when things slow way down. Hit me back then. Could be a fun exercise!

A. Yes. Especially if they were to pick up the Option on Hill and include him in a deal to match salary. If not, it gets a lot tighter, but still potentially do-able, if they were to dump everyone else who is a FA and/or Non-Guaranteed. Most likely, this would have to occur after the Draft though, because the Lakers have no space at the moment. So, a post Moratorium deal.
B. A little. Probably around 4-5 million. And they would have the Room Execption. And a LOT of roster spots to fill out. The roster would be:
Kobe Bryant
DeMarcus Cousins
Ryan Kelly
David Lee
Nick Young
Not sure how many guys they are getting for 5 million total to spend, plus the Room Exception, and Minimum deals. Or at least not the quality of those players.
**Edit - I missed where you said a post 7/1 deal. Then, it is the scenario B I laid out below.

I think this move would be made more-so for 2016 when they would have Nick Young, DeMarcus Cousins and a ton of cap space so the quality of players probably wouldn't need to be amazing since a Cousins-Kobe core doesn't win a championship this year either way. However, if the Kings wanted to retain Ray MacCullum, re-sign Andre Miller and keep Jordan Clarkson, does adding Darren Collison going to the Lakers in this deal work cap wise July 1st?
C-DeMarcus Cousins
PF-David Lee
SF-Nick Young
SG-Kobe Bryant
PG-Darren Collison
At least resembles an attempt to grab the 8 seed even if the bench is full of minimum players.

It gets really tight with Collison added in. Without the exact Cap number right now, it is hard to know for sure. But it is pretty close. By less than 100k I think.

Thanks so much for all the value you add to this board:
Scenario:
Post-Draft, the Knicks stretch Jose Calderon and renounce all of their free agents leaving just the rookie draft rights, Cleanthony Early, Langston Galloway and Carmelo Anthony on the books plus cap holds, what kind of cap space are they looking at?

I got you, assuming a $68 Million salary cap and Jose Calderon taking his full contract stretched, the Knicks should have $31,458,490 in cap space.

If I did all of the numbers and math on it, could you confirm if it looks correct if I did a past scenario?
I'm going to do it later when I get home, but the scenario I'm going to crunch the numbers on is:
The Knicks end up with the same draft pick post-lottery (select Porzingis) and make the THJ for Jerian Grant trade as well as the J.R. Smith and Shumpert to Cleveland deal with two major differences:
1.) The Knicks held out for a Timofey Mozgov type of deal for Tyson Chandler. I just gotta see who in hindsight would give one or two first rounders and an expiring contract for Chandler.
2.) The Knicks took the proposed sign and trade from Chicago of sending them Carmelo Anthony for Carlos Boozer, Mike Dunleavy, Jimmy Butler and the rights to Nikola Mirotic.
I'm going to see without the Tyson to Dallas trade and hence no Calderon or Cleanthony Early and if they renounced Boozer and Dunleavy, but kept Jimmy Butler's cap hold, just how much cap space the Knicks would have this off-season.

Sure I can give you idea if it is in range. I don't have the time at the moment to actually mock it up myself, but I can tell you if it seems right. Make sure you put Butler in as a Max QO (approx 15.8) for both salary and Cap Hold.

Assuming they don't renounce Cole Aldrich (he has a cap hold of just 947K while the Knicks have early bird on him so they could sign him to a fairly decent deal and they'd only gain 420K renouncing him) and keep Grant, Galloway, Early, Anthony, Porzingis they'd have 30.6 million in cap space.

Seems about right to me. One would hope that team would have been bad enough to improve their Lottery odds enough to get the #1 pick, but that is something we would never know!
