This is a great example of a discussion we had earlier - how much credit do they get for resigning AD? Anyone would offer him every dollar possible, but it was AD who made the decision to come back. It wasn't a master stroke by management or within their control. In fact, they did little to entice him in terms of improving the team.

Put that aside, and they get a C for Gentry offsetting the fact they really did little else.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Who cares how much credit they should get? It's done. It's such a huge win for them. I'm actually stunned I'm the only person willing to give them an A+ for getting AD to sign the 5 year max extension a year in advance. This guy is the future of the league and they have him under control for a minimum of 5 more years. 5 more years! Of Anthony Freaking Davis.

If any other team had acquired Anthony Davis period much less locking him for 5 years we would all have given that team an A+. The Pelicans ended any potential worries and kept a franchise player in New Orleans long-term. I feel like this is some bizzarro world where I'm the only guy who sees what an enormous deal this is.

I don't see how anyone could see it the other way.

Completely disagree. I'm not attributing this to you, but many people are maligning the Asik signing, or questioning why we didn't blow it up in the hopes of drafting or signing a superstar. However, keeping the folks we have, including the big burly center that keeps AD from having to play the 5 during the playoffs, is why he felt comfortable signing the 5 year max deal. They are related.
