I knew they would be able to dump Wrights contract without giving up assets. There would be teams gambling on Memphis Wright....

We are inching closer to knowing the details of these seconds. And Ariza is officially on his third team of the offseason.

I'd guess it would be the SRP they got out of Houston for the Wood S&T if Detroit is sending anything. Detroit traded four SRP's to LAC in the Kennard trade including '24, '25, '26 and if Detroit is sending them that far out I think it means they didn't have any others.
Detroit is also taking on extra year for an expiring Ariza here.
Hasn't Ariza only $ 1,8 mln guaranteed for this season?
No, the full 12.6 needed to be guaranteed for some reason or other when he was traded from Portland with Covington.
Even more so, Ariza's contract was scheduled to fully guarantee before free agency opened and team's like Detroit had the cap space to even absorb his contract (when originally agreed, before it was worked into a Christian Wood deal).

This always made the most sense. I know most of you like Delon more than me, but getting off his last year shouldn't have been free and it wasn't.

Still a good trade for Dallas, getting rid off Wright for a couple of 2nds. How many 2nds we traded to get Wright to begin with:. 2 2nds? So that makes 4 2nds to make this right. Sure wish we traded for Dragic instead, but it is what it is... We need dogs and not chihuahua's that finesse layups

Detroit took on Delon's second year for free for the expiring Ariza. Now I'm not sure if Ariza for Wright could have happened straight up between Detroit and Dallas of OKC needed to be brought in as the "sin eating" to take the money difference. Could Ariza, Jackson and the two second rounders for Johnson happen as a secondary stand alone and if so how would you feel about that vs just keeping Ariza?

I would have kept Ariza. And Jackson wouldn't have to have been involved(unless Detroit wanted him and they'd be welcome to him obviously). I don't see how Johnson is two 2nd rounders more useful than Ariza.
But Dallas wanted toughness and Johnson does represent that I guess.

Maybe I'm wrong on Johnson but Ariza just makes way more sense on the court is "toughness" really worth two seconds and a downgrade on the floor? Eh.

Detroit took on Delon's second year to shave off $3M from this years cap. Not saying it was the sole reason as Casey has coached Delon before but I don't think they'd have wanted Jackson.

It made the most sense for Dallas to pay to get off of Delons contract
... but why is OKC getting compensated for swapping J.Johnson (exp) for Ariza/Jackson (exp) while DET, the team who took Delon for a decent expiring vet in Ariza - got nothing?
DET’s GM must have had a batch of special brownies on him this off season.
As for Ariza/Jackson vs J.Johnson at the cost of two 2nds, I agree Dal overpaid for that swap, that being said, due to Dallas already having Rich and DFS (Green/Bey too), how they could prefer to have Johnson’s frame, which will be capable of guarding most bigs fairly well (similar to PJ just taller).

This is not true at all and also shows that you was way off in the months before the FA because you claimed in multiple threads that it would cost at least #31 to dump Wright because he has negative value. Other users said he has neutral value because there could/should be GMs who are banking on his time in Toronto and Memphis and his below MLE salary. And this exactly what happened with Casey as Pistons coach and the two 2nds actually going to OKC.
Mavs/Pistons could have just cut out OKC and do the simpe Ariza/Wright swap. The Mavs chose to include OKC and send two SRP to them so they could switch Ariza to Johnson.
Dumping Wrights last year was free, switching Ariza to Johnson cost the two SRP. And i totally see the value here for the Mavs, Johnsons size & skillset is something the Mavs dont have on the current roster, he is a good friend of Josh Richardson and in general a great teammate and Ariza is an overrated career journeyman. The SRP are supposed to be from playoff teams, so they should be #44 or worse...

Re: [Official] J. Johnson to DAL, Wright to DET, Ariza/Jackson/pick to OKC
Fair enough.
Though I didn't claim it would cost at least #31. I typically offered #31 as incentive because nothing else made sense to offer. But was quite open I didn't know.
Still hated the Delon Wright signing at the time and Dallas is out 4 2nd rounders because of it and no James Johnson making $15M is not worth 2 2nds. He's negative value himself.
Now I like what Donnie did here, but make no mistake the whole Delon Wright deal was a fiasco and their misevaluation definitely had a price. But what I love about Donnie is when he makes a mistake he doesn't let his ego get in the way and compounds the problem like lots of GM's do. He just pays the price to fix his mistake and moves forward not worrying about sunk costs.
I hope my fellow Mavs fans appreciate that about Donnie/Cuban.
