Powell for Trent: your take?

Beyond the Norm: Portland wins. Trent was likely a goner in the offseason anyway, so why not a win-now upgrade?

I prefer this trade for Toronto I think. I feel as though Powell will have wanted too much from them in this current market and it allows them to re-sign Trent for a lower deal. Not sure how well Powell will fit into Portland with them already having Lillard and CJ throwing up shots unless they're going to have him running the plays with the second unit, and the fact he's unrestricted at the end of the season could mean they lose him for nothing. Trent on the Raptors feels like a really comfortable fit though, I like it.

In his Rookie and 2nd year he was great defensively. Then just kinda regressed a bit. I'd still say he is average to good on the defensive end. He's a playoff performer too. I think Portland will like him.
The key is not the ‘will to win’… everybody has that. It is the will to prepare to win that is important

Feel like a win for Toronto. Is Portland paying Powell ? Makes them closer to a contender in the short term.

Good move by both teams. But I thought the Raps were moving Powell because they couldnt afford to resign? Can they afford Trent?

My thinking is this:
1) Trent is not going to be a $20M+ like Powell (deservedly so, go get paid Normie)
2) Trent is on a really low cap hold, so the Raptors can keep a starter level wing and go chase free agents to improve the team

Will Malik Beasley now appeal to some of the teams that didn’t get Powell?

MIN is loaded with guards, and Anthony Edwards has been scoring like (inefficient) 25 a game since the All Star Break.

Portland definitely won this trade. Powell is just a better player. Now there is risk because they don't have matching rights, but Portland wins.

If the Raptors knew they didn't want to pay Powell market rate then this is okay, though I would have gotten a 1st instead of now maybe having to match a similar number for a worse player.

I can rationalize this for the Raptors (thought Norm wouldnt come back, got more control with the RFA), but someones gotta explain this from POR's perspective for me. They got bigger needs than another undersized 2 guard who's a very efficient shooter and scorer. You'd think they'd use GTJ to shore up the 4 spot or get a big wing

Unless they move CJ, do they really want to pay Powell to come off the bench? Would Powell even want that? He is clearly a starting quality player.

Its a clear talent upgrade, but why would Portland want him longterm if he costs? Why would Powell want to be here long term if he becomes a bench player?

Thx, so its basically the same as Trent as far as POR can match, but if I remember correctly we can't extend him as we could have Trent?

Portland can match only in he sense that they can offer him the same. Unlike RFAs, they can't force him to accept. It will be Powells decision whether he is okay with being a bench player..

No matching rights, but Portland can exceed the cap to offer him as much as a max.

I also expect Portland is going to play all 3 guards together a lot. Maybe CJ becomes a 6th man playing starter's minutes if they re-sign Powell, but they have minutes for all of them for sure.

would love to see them move CJ if they can find a better fit for the roster, maybe they consider that this summer if we bomb in the playoffs yet again and Powell likely much cheaper than CJ's current extension

Makes little sense from Portland's POV unless they trade CJ this summer for while they may have his Bird Rights,
they won't be able to afford to pay him given he's a UFA.

Except Powell is likely to leave in fa, no?

IDK. Has Powell given any indication where he wants to be?? And POR might finally be ready to trade CJ.

The other + for the Raps is cap hold. This opens up about 20ish mill in cap space for the Raps ( i think a bit more) while Powell's cap hold wouldve taken it all. Raps are able to get a FA, re-sign Trent and operate as an over the cap team.
