Don't seem like Gasol had intent on playing this year. At least for the Lakers. He still in Spain instead of practitcing with the team for the season.

DAJ maybe, no way he a better player than current Dwight. Guy a shell of himself. He Still can dominate defensively with good matchups.

Dwight's still pretty solid as a backup, he's still a serious presence physically and can board and protect the rim as well as almost anyone. If he didn't constantly make some of the dumbest and weirdest decisions of anyone in pro sports he could possibly still start on some teams.

Think they all backups at this point of their career. Too many minutes for them and you start seeing negative returns. Probably won't be playing in crunch time either.

Yeah, I'm happy to turn our ability to help out expensive contenders into minor assets, but it feels like we've been selling a lot of cap relief - to the teams we'll be competing with this year and in the future - for not all that much in the way of return. This deal, in particular, just feels like us doing the Lakers a solid. Again.

Maybe someone else would have done this at approximately this price, but when all you're risking missing out on is, what, a few dollars and a D-list prospect, you could at least try finding out what price the market will bear. I'd like to see the teams in a position to help out contenders act more like a cartel and less like a utility, I guess.

This board needs to remember that Lakers traded saved $10M in a trade and got a $2.7M trade exception for a 2nd round pick. People often talk about that money needing a 1st to make up the value.

Teams don't pay incentive based on the money saved, it sure a motivating factor to do the trade but doesn't really factor that much into the price paid for the dump. Like if a non tax team wanted to dump a 2.7m contract on Memphis for cash/2nd I am not going to charge them less than the Lakers paid here.

I don't see many/any? posters stating that a 2.7m salary dump should cost a 1st even if the team saves 10 million overall.

You are right. I misread something that made me think they dumped a $10M contract and somehow only got a smaller trade exception, but now I realized most of that savings must be from tax.

I find it interesting that Memphis is getting salary dumps and OKC seems to have zero interest even though they aren't doing anything else. Presti went from doing everything to doing nothing and its really confusing.

In this specific scenario, I doubt OKC wasn't going to take Gasol for less than Memphis got so it makes a ton of sense to do right by Gasol and trade him to Memphis so that he can end his career on the Grizzlies.

As for the other dumps yeah you would think OKC would get involved though most of the dumps Memphis was involved in had us sending out savings as well as a player in return that the other team wanted more than the junk they sent Memphis with the Bledsoe/NOP deal being the glaring exception. Maybe because that deal happened so early OKC was waiting in anticipation of something better to come along?

Okay, now this trade makes no sense to me for Memphis. They get a (most likely) late 2nd and only 250k. I figured the money involved would cover Gasol's salary, or already agreed to buy out price.

I assume Gasol's quietly agreed to a buyout that will leave Memphis on the hook for not much for the the $250k. But this one does feel underpriced to me. The lakers are not going to turn around and help you out in the future just because you kept looking out for them.

I mean Memphis isn't at all close to the luxury tax and that seems to be the important financial limit for our team. Pera eating a couple million so that we can get another 2nd, even if late, is smart the way our FO uses what feels like half a dozen 2nds every draft now ha. It also is Memphis helping take care of one of the most important guys in franchise history. In the grand scheme of things it won't matter, but I like the deal since it didn't cost the team anything of value outside Pera's wallet.

OKC ate the TJ Leaf salary difference (they sent back Jalen Lecque’s equally dead weight, but smaller salary) last year of about the same for just a 2nd.
