If Blake Griffin looks both good and healthy, I bet he's a Mav at the deadline

THJ, James Johnson, Dwight Powell and Jalen Brunson for Blake Griffin and Derrick Rose?

KP/Blake front-court
Luka/Richardson/Rose completing the starting 5?

Combine this with the use it or lose it nature of their cap space and their lack of trade assets, and Dallas effectively needs Luka to be Dirk 2.0 in his ability to lead a contender without a 2nd star. It can be done, but its asking a lot considering Harden and Dame have been really good in this conference a long time and their teams have struggled to break through. No Warriors/Lebron level teams should help in a few years, but this is asking a lot of Luka in the superteam era.

I dont really think this is accurate. All Dallas needs to do is not hand out contracts that go longer than the Zinger deal. Target another run for a big fish in 2024. At that point Luka will still only be like 24.

In the meantime maybe go after Lowry on a 3 year stint and hope Richardson takes a 3 year reup.

Its nowhere near panic time for Dallas. Luka is a baby. By age 24 he likely will be more attractive for a star wanting to find a home.

I'm not that patient. Not to wait 4 years. No no no. And the Mavs shouldn't be either. Luka might sign a 4+1, but he might opt for something shorter to max his leverage.

The situation isn't dire and they don't need to panic, but if we are realistic the only path to a 2nd star for Dallas right now appears to be KP growing into it. Or I guess jay's guy Dipo re-finding his form of 2 years ago and choosing Dallas which feels like a very unlikely combo.

So yeah they need Luka to be able to do it with a team of plus role players(assuming Dallas can piece that together, its not in place yet).

I'm not that patient either, but I believe Porzingis is the second star. Yes, I'm worried about injuries and reduced minutes leading to lack of consistent impact, but I see the player and his fit in Dallas as having an incredibly high ceiling. I'm willing to bet on that, and it's not like he didn't have monster games this past season. He lead that upset at Milwaukee without Luka where he hit those long range daggers. He had 10 30pt games, 20 more 20pt games, 27 10reb games and 19 games with 3+ blocks in 57 games (not including his three playoff games).

So I don't think they need a second star, just more good players that fit what Dallas wants. I'm not going to turn down better players and fits out of hand, just that I'm looking for the right value. I'm excited about this coming year to see how Richardson fits and what, if any, impact the rookies can make before seeing what the priorities will be.

How did Barnes' tenure in Dallas go? Boban and Johnson for Barnes?

The Mavs will be able to add talent through trade like they always have. No need to solely focus on free agency.

Hence me mentioning the asset problem. Can't trade for a star with no assets. They can certainly upgrade their rotation by eating money, but no 2nd star.

You’re probably right however with super teams being pretty much dead right now they may not need a 3rd star in order to win a title. And if JRich plays the season the way he did in preseason he’s going to be a real weapon for this team.
