Just very poor management and execution on the Mavs' part. There was no need to extend Hardy in the first place, and Exum isnt good enough to warrant having to stretch/waive or trade someone with incentive.

Sure. It didn't work out, as yet, with Hardy, but I can see the idea. They had hoped that extending Hardy early would save money overall, but they seemed to miss on the projection.

Ultimately, I think they can dump OMP or Powell with a cash payment that covers their salary and an extra million or so, and save their last remaining draft capital.

But do you think there's a viable trade where Dallas could get him? Would OKC want Naji? Or a 3 team trade where Team X gets Gaff, Dallas gets WIggins, and OKC gets player from Team X?

I will move Isaiah Joe / Kenrich / Jaylin before I move wiggins . His salary is low and potentially he’s an offensive spark plug for us.

He’s a high end 7th-9th man for now and can potentially be a very decent 6th man.

That makes sense. I've been racking my brain trying to come up with a sensible three-teamer like Wiggins to Dallas, Gaff to SA, Sochan to OKC, or Cha's Salun instead of Sochan, but I don't see OKC touching either, even with a glut at guard and more of a need at forward.

Ya Wiggins is hidden gold IMO. On a lower seed playoff team I could see him as a 15-18ppg excellent 4th option type. He has really developed his game over the past few years.

OKC would be fools to trade him, and as OKC isnt a foolish franchise, and he is locked up, he will be there for a long time.

Shams reporting that Dallas is indeed stretch-waiving OMP.

Didn’t have OMP as a good prospect, but thought some team would take him for their true vet min and (Dallas’) cash… eh

Then Dallas buys out the vet min and signs Exum. No stretch.

The Nets just cut Tosan Evbuomwan like 4-5 hours ago. They were also linked to Olivier. No one was giving anything to get him, and the Mavs shouldn’t have added anything to unload him.

I think Dallas should’ve looked for OMP + “1-2 mil” for vet min. They didn’t need to clear the full 2mil for Exum, had some breathing room from second apron. But choose to do this. Which (just slightly) impacts future years. Just seems kind of dumb, honestly..

Because of his extremely cheap extension , I only see him being traded with 1-2 season left when we couldn’t afford his next contract . With the way SGA/ jdub / Chet extension will play out , we definitely need him next 1-2 season and our backcourt strength is defence while he bring us offense .

So a long way of saying very unlikely.

They have to pay Javale McGee for 3 more seasons (including this one) because of some ridiculous contract they gave a guy who clearly hit “2 years, a bit over minimum” era.

Teams are too quick to do the stretch waive thing

Nico is lots of things, one of them is being creative and stopping at nothing to achieve his goal, and it makes for some really odd moves, sometimes it works:
- Trade down 2 spots to dump Bertans
- Trade unprotected swap for Gafford
- Trade a near unprotected 1st for PJ
- Out of the blue, trade KP for what was considered 2 bad deals in Dinwiddie and Bertans
Sometimes it backfires:
- Trading unprotected swap to get Grant Williams while maintaining the MLE, who he used on Thybulle and got matched, while the Williams signing was a colossal failure.
- Sign McGee for 3 years at 35 years if age, thinking he'll be the answer at center
- Trade a 1st for malcontent Wood who butted heads with Kidd
- Attempting to trade unprotected 1st and swap for Kuzma who for some odd reason decided to save Nico from himself.

And then there is that trade on Feb 1st, 2025.
It's really a roller-coaster with him...

One underrated mistake (IMO) that will prove very costly, that implicitly caused this W&S, Mavs were below tax after the Luka trade, he decided to go and get Caleb Martin, Mavs paid tax in 23, and 25, will be tax team this year, without the deal they would have reset repeater tax count, next year, the new tax regime will start and Mavs will be deep in tax as repeater tax offenders, that Martin trade will end up costing them 50M, we'll see how the Casino people react, without the Martin trade, Mavs could have just not extended Grimes, and kept OMax as 3rd string forward.

They are friends, but I don't think it stops a good trade from happening.
I wouldn't do the Vuc deal, team defense is suspect as it is.
Healthy Maxi is a good player, it's just very rare I wouldn't count on it.

Would assume they are friendly. Probably not the level that DFS was.

Maybe a bad idea, but trying to balance something like this with a third team. Dallas made sense but doesn't really have salaries that work:

BRK trades: Michael Porter Jr.
in: DeMar DeRozan, expirings, Devin Carter Jr.

SAC trades: Devin Carter Jr., DeMar DeRozan, Malik Monk
in: Michael Porter Jr.

??? trades: expirings
in: Malik Monk

I am mainly interested in what it does for the Kings. They get DeRozan off the team and upgrade Monk. There are rumors they may trade Carter (I don't really believe those because Utah loved him in the draft and has been rumored to be interested, so I think if something were going to happen for him they would have done something by now). This gives them a nice forward rotation, too.

Sabonis/Raynaud
Murray/McDermott
MPJ/Clifford
LaVine/Ellis
Schroder/Westbrook

I don't think this really hurts the Kings future, it does clear Monk's salary a bit earlier, and they do get younger. MPJ seems like a guy who 5 years from now will be a nice shooting wing off the bench a la Harrison Barnes. IDK, again, probably bad ... but all that shooting off of Sabonis would at least be fun and would also maximize Westbrook minutes.

I could google, but what have been his injuries?

I was mostly thinking about a Gabe/Kleber for Vuc, Vuc off the bench and this opens a roster spot:)

2nd round pick should be enough, no?
Maxi's injuries are like ADs, random injuries, nothing chronic, the chronic thing about them is that they keep happening, and each time he comes back from a long absence, it takes him months to gain back confidence in his shot, which is his main offensive weapon.

Mavs officially sign Exum, it's a full 15 man roster now, only open question is PJ extension.

PJ should 100% sign the extension. The minutes arent gonna be there like they were before in a stacked FC and without an elite PG, he might go back to looking like Charlotte PJ. He should get his money knowing he'll probably be traded next offseason (unless AD is traded and Mavs go young)
