Well I would, but I’d be surprised if ownership did.

Yeah that seems like the kind of callous maneuver that GS has avoided. I also think Klay likely will be reduced in his effectiveness but his catch and shoot will still be there. Worst case, he’s Korver, right?

Yeah, my thinking there is less "sentence him to play for a crappy team" and more that an OKC type of team would be happy to take him on for draft picks and then declare him medically retired and get off his contract sooner than they would Wiggins'.

Worst case is Bill Walton, right? Just can't stay on the court and his "good season" is playing less than 20 mpg and then never recovering after that.

That's what worries me the most. He's big and he can shoot so even if with lost mobility defensively you can hide him on the corner guy and get away with it. Even Korver couldn't be really hunted because of his size/intelligence. Klay will be the same.

But if he can't stay healthy....

Klay Thompson

2021-22.....Contract details by year.....31.....$37,980,720
2022-23.....Contract details by year.....32.....$40,600,080
2023-24.....Contract details by year.....33.....$43,219,440

Wall

2021-22.....Contract details by year.....31.....$44,310,840
2022-23.....Contract details by year.....32.....$47,366,760

If Thompson is significantly underperforming his contract, then Presti is going to demand quite a bit in assets just to make the trade. If OKC is also supposed to send positive stuff out, then Golden State will need to include quite a bit in assets.

Unless there’s another major injury I don’t think Klay’s the type to be interested in retirement.

If one meant current Korver as worst case, then I’d agree.

What? He's just the type (https://fansided.com/2021/07/08/klay-thompson-post-nba-retirement-plans/) plus anyone who's made as much money as him and has already spent 2 years rehabbing from an ACL plus an Achilles would be totally justified in not wanting to try to come back from another injury. Plus either way, medical retirement does not necessarily equal actual retirement. See: LaMarcus Aldridge.

Having retirement plans isn’t wanting to retire in the near future.

OK thanks for the pedantry. Obviously Klay getting injured again or just looking shot, as I mentioned originally, would change the calculus.

If I were Klay, and got injured again, I’d probably prefer getting paid almost $84m over the next two years to rehab and recover, rather than retire, and get paid nothing to still do so.

It's amusing, but understandable as it can be viewed as perhaps lowering the return the Sixers could get by publicly eliminating a potential bidder.

61. What are the rules for retired players? What if the player suffers a career-ending injury?

There is one exception whereby a player can continue to receive his salary, but the salary is excluded from team salary. This is when a player suffers a career-ending injury or illness. The team must waive the player, and can apply for this salary exclusion following a waiting period. Only the player's team at the time the injury or illness was discovered (or reasonably should have been discovered) can apply for this salary exclusion.

The team can apply to have the player's salary excluded starting on the first anniversary of the player's last regular season or playoff game, and not before the one-year anniversary of the first regular season game for which the player was on the team's roster under his current contract. If the player played in fewer than 10 games in the last season in which he played, the team can apply on the one-year anniversary of the player's last regular season or playoff game, or 60 days after his last game in the current season, whichever is later.

The determination as to whether an injury or illness is career ending is made by a physician jointly selected by the league and players association, or by a Fitness to Play panel (see question number 62). The determination is based on whether the injury or illness will prevent the player from playing for the remainder of his career, or if it is severe enough that continuing to play constitutes a medically unacceptable risk.

If the injury exclusion is granted, the player's salary is removed from the team salary immediately.

Ooh, you're almost at the point of having a smart thought! Now, tell me why it would make any difference to him what team is signing his checks if he were to get paid while not playing.

Recent reporting has him set to miss Warriors home games due to lack of vaccination.

Is it going to be a problem for any game in California or just Home games?
