I know Matthews was solid for the Bucks last year, but "starting SG for a contender who defends the other team's best wing" seems like a lot to pencil him in for at age 34 and post-injury.

Who else would defend the best wing? Lebron?

DG and Mathews played the same minutes last season.

If it's a process of elimination between two guys in their mid-30s, then maybe it's Matthews. But I don't know if that's a great way to build a contender.

And I don't think you can rely on Matthews giving you the same as he did the Bucks last year, when he's a year older and playing in a less impressive (though still good) defensive lineup.

Same can be said bout DG last season. I don't see one reason he can't play the same role as DG for 20 to 25 minutes .

Was worried Cousins would go to a contender and look good. Now he might end up tank captain.

I hope Cousins can play a full season but his history does not indicate this.

Literally none of those things were true of Danny Green (who was 32) coming in to last season. They are different players, and different people, which is why Matthews just signed for about a quarter of what Green is earning. I don't think you can fall back on "if Danny Green can do it, that automatically means Wesley Matthews can too"
"shooting free throws in the ACC is much tougher"

Pretty amazing to think that you can put out a chemistry fire by throwing Boogie Cousins on it :D Hopefully he has matured a lot during his time in the league, because Houston needs it.

I don't think the chemistry fire is as much between all the players as between the players and owner.

I agree with that part. The question is what happens if things continue to sour in Houston: will having Cousins around make that better or worse?

Most of what I hear says that he's come a long way since his fiery days in Sacramento. Hopefully that's true.

Being a contender solves a lot of issues (IMO) if Cousins is back to his level from before (doubtful, but possible) he might be the perfect third piece for that team, and they might all feel that they are contenders and be fine staying. I think that's the play, you don't lose anything, you just gain if it works. Otherwise it isn't changing what is available for Westbrook/Harden.

FWIW, Cousins' deal is not guaranteed:

After seeing some of the contracts this offseason, I think he will stick to his desire of more than 22m.

Gallanari and Bogdan are high caliber starting level NBA players. One gets 20.5 a season and the other gets 18.0 a season. Collins is right in their grouping. Hayward got 30 and is a former All Star. There were not a lot of big contracts signed this year for non all star players like Collins. Mitchell and Tatum are All Stars. Its pretty obvious Collins is not there yet; plus the PEDS suspension.

I disagree. If he wants what Tatum and Mitchell got, he is not going to get it. From the Hawks or anyone else in my opinion.

I mean there are reports he wants the max. A rebuilding team with cap space may throw him a very large offer in order to dare Atlanta to match. Sure he will be overpaid, but he is a very good young player who could fit their core enough for it to be worth it. For instance if Memphis can get a top pick next draft and get an elite wing, I'd be happy if we use all our cap to try and get Collins.

If there aren't any other good options then why not? If the 2021 pick is the elite player Memphis fans are hoping for we have a solid lineup. I'd prefer OG probably but if Collins is the only option then I can live with it.

I see what you mean. I just don't think anyone throws a max at a non all star. The Kings did with Fox but they are the Kings. If Collins blows up like I think he will this coming season, that all star game and max may happen. I predicted 24 and 10 for him next season.

Not sure Matthews is better than Green, but there is plenty of evidence that they're about equal value. Last year, Green had a better regular season, while Matthews had a better playoffs.

(And as has been pointed out in other threads, Green has struggled in at least his last 4 playoff appearances, shooting 34%, 25%, 33%, and 34% from 3 in those years.)

2019-20 stats:

https://stathead.com/basketball/pcm_finder.cgi?request=1&sum=0&player_id1_hint=Danny+Green&player_id1_select=Danny+Green&player_id1=greenda02&idx=bbr__players&p1yrfrom=2020&player_id2_hint=Wesley+Matthews&player_id2_select=Wesley+Matthews&player_id2=matthwe02&idx=bbr__players&p2yrfrom=2020

Highlights:

Regular Season 3p %: Matthews 36.4%, Green 36.7%
Regular Season OBPM/DBPM/BPM: Matthews -2.6/.7/-1.8, Green -1.5, .5, 1.1
Regular Season TS%: Matthews .55, Green .55

Playoffs 3p%: Matthews 39.5%, Green 33.9%
Playoffs OBPM/DBPM/BPM: Matthews -1.6/1.7/.2, Green -1.2/.5/-.7
Playoffs TS%: Matthews .596, Green .473

I think it's fair to say that in swapping Green for Matthews, the Lakers got essentially the same player, but saved $11.5mil.

OTOH, Wes has never been in a situation where fans send his family death threats if he has a bad game. So maybe he gets rattled.

Makes the trade a lot better for NOP. Keeps Steven around until he’s 30.

4 Hours until the decision :D I think the Kings match. For a rebuilding squad their cap sheet is going to look pretty bad until they can move someone. That gives the Hawks a little hope.

If it was Amick, Woj, or Shams I'd trust it more.

Anderson got the "no deal" to the Bucks rumor right the night before everyone else.

Sweet, gives McNair more time to ponder trades and the situation.

Annoys the Hawks tying up the cap for a bit too.
