Hey, Smitty! I was told to come to you fro all the cap information, so here I am!

So, I have a question about the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Assuming we make no trades this year all of our 1 years expire (Novak, Waiters, Augustin), and assuming Durant will re-sign for 1 year to take full advantage of the cap jump in 2017-18, then what is the max amount Durant can re-sign for, considering it is 1 year? Where does that leave us with cap room?

Happy to help!

Durant is eligible for the 7-9 years of experience Max. That is currently going to be around 25.1 million for next year. Not exactly that, and it won't settle until the Cap and BRI are official, but it will be in that approximate range.

Assuming Durant resigns for the Max amount (and he's getting the Max no matter where he goes), the Thunder won't have any Cap space. The maximum space the Thunder can get to is just over $22 million, so resigning Durant would use all of that plus some. And they wouldn't get to that space anyway, because to be able to resign Durant to a Max deal, they can't renounce his FA rights.

Hope that helps!

What is B.R.I.?

So Durant is eligible for approx. 25.1 million next year, correct? That's for 1 year, right? But if he signs the longest deal, then the 1st year would start off at approx. 22 mil. correct?

So, if the Oklahoma City Thunder is over the salary cap after Durant re-signs, how do we sign other players? I've heard about veterans minimum and mid-level exceptions. Do those two avenues become our only options for nabbing a player in the offseason, excluding trades?

Max deals are commonly referred to as a percentage of the Cap. But it is actually 25, 30 or 35% of the 42.14% of BRI. BRI is Basketball Related Income. That is the figure the CBA uses to set the Cap. The Cap is set at 44.74% of BRI. Basically, the formula reduces the amount of a Max salary by just a bit.

For Durant, having 7-9 years of experience, he is eligible for 30%, which should be right around $25.1 million. The first year salary for guy like Durant will almost always be the Max amount. He won't take less than the Max amount. If he signed for longer than that with OKC, he's eligible for 7.5% raises. It is important to note that the raise amount is set off the first year salary. They aren't compounding off each subsequent year.

And you are correct in what means the Thunder will have available to them for signing FAs. They'll have to use whatever Exceptions are available to them.

Yup I get to undo all of that! Well, it is actually already undone in the database. I'm hoping to get it all up on the site tomorrow.
