I've been thinking about him a lot. At a glance you see a young wing playing pretty well and think well he's one of the few keepers along with Flagg. But when you look a little closer he only has one more year under contract before a PO, which he is tracking to opt out of. Which means he's gone or a lot more expensive.
And his salary is under $8M, plus he does have that extra year so contenders who tend to be up against aprons could still fit in him and because its not a pure rental, its easier to give up a real asset.
The question is, is he worth a lotto protected 1st? Where Dallas simply pushes some asset value forward? Is there a contending team with a 2nd tier prospect they'd be willing to move to get a wing shooter who can't be hunted defensively?
Or is he just worth a 2nd or two and I'm overthinking it based on his small contract? But I'm a firm believer in bad teams dealing value contracts since they aren't really realizing the value of the cheap salary. And while I know you are more optimistic about next year, I see all the same issues only maybe with Kyrie. Which obviously helps, but not enough.
I think I’d lean with keeping him honestly. I don’t see some jump to stardom at all. But I do think he can keep developing into a decent starting two guard in case Dallas doesn’t get Peterson.. decide whether to keep him or trade him once he’s on his next contract?
I don’t see him extending if he has to opt in to 2027-2028 though. Which iirc players have to opt in to player option in order to extend early? If I’m wrong, I do think he might agree to opt out and extend for 2 years with another player option on the “4th” year if he can be done this coming summer. Would only be like 12-13 mil a year so he’d end up underpaid but some extra security in it.
But some team would pay a well protected first for him? Or at least should imo. And Dallas could package him with Naji to get a better asset? Or package him with Gafford (to Boston)
