I think its for Hayward's full salary this year of 30 million. I think that is a new TPE record.

Yes. But, they're getting something in exchange for tying that up now.

Ehhh, Maybe. But I think the lower cap number is an even exchange for the risk of Bam regressing or getting serious injury. So that is fair, but when you factor in the need of cap space for Miami it just seems a bit short sighted.

My quick calcs show Miami having 87M between 5 players(Jimmy, Herro, Bam, Precious, Okpala), Anderson Dead Cap (5m), Robinson/Nunn Cap hold, and 5 Min roster spots.
28M Bam salary vs 13M cap hold is 15M extra that would allow them to have almost 40M in cap space instead of 25M... thats a world of difference.

Yeah, but also shows him the love, maintains the Miami atmosphere of player friendly and rewarding their own, and keeps another team from messing up their future with a 3 year max that they would match, but pushes Bam out the door earlier than expected. There's value in keeping your own happy, and saving up to the 5% is pretty solid, too. The value it provides in the locker room is also huge, as it shows guys like Herro what to keep working towards.

Story that no one talked about (or they did and I missed it):
Denzel Valentine got the q/o and immediately said yes. Yes, absolutely I will take 4.6m and only 1 year of security.

When that happens that fast, you have to realize you just overpaid. And got no long term optionality. One of my least favorite contracts of the current batch of free agency.

Should probably find that Chicago best move/worst move thread, instead of posting here.

Yeah. Have to assume that Valentine and his agent were just hoping for a guaranteed deal for next year. Getting the QO was likely money he never thought he’d see.

It *could* just be that Valentine, given the choice of locking into a small multi-year deal with Chicago, opted instead to become UFA in a year where there's going to be much more money out there.

That's just speculation, obviously. Just as likely (or more) he knew he wasn't going to get offered more than $4.6M this year so he took it.

Excellent signing. Kings out-competed the Lakers for this guy. He will have a strong year and GMs will wonder why they didn't offer him more than the Kings.

Valentine looked like he regressed the longer he was under Boylen like a lot of guys and had injury issues last year. I have a feeling the front office wants to see how he looks healthy under a real coach, and it was not like they were going to spend the money elsewhere.

Good signing for the Kings. I really hope Reggie Jackson finds a east coast team

This was before Charlotte used some of their cap to sign Vernon Carey but still pretty close.

I'm pretty confused about Charlotte. If they have 9m in space now after stretching Batum and signing Hayward, does that mean they just needed to clear a couple million to sign Hayward?

They got rid of $18M off this year's cap by stretching Batum over the next 3 seasons. If they still have $9M cap, that means they must have needed to clear at least $9M to take Hayward.

Is there a complete list of rookies, training camp deals, and two-way contracts signed anywhere?

Batum made $27.9m or so. Waiving and stretching him clears $18+m in cap/tax savings. After that waive/stretch and signing Hayward, they have around $7m in cap space left. They needed $11m of that $18m that waiving/stretching Batum provided.

Basically we didn't want to give away Rozier for 11 million cap relief. If Jerami Grant gets 20 and 3 over the open market, Rozier would command more money as a free agent right now. The Pistons have useless cap with or without Grant but so do the Knicks. Our need for cap relief diluted Rozier's value and cost us leverage in negotiations surrounding him. We can always circle back after he raises his value and gets closer to being an expiring at 17.9 million. Maybe at the deadline we offer him to the Knicks for Randle and the 2021 Pistons pick.

So is the below fine print another reason to do a SNT? To be able to trade the player sooner than three months. That would make sense to me as to why the Hawks elected to turn Gallinari into a SNT.

A free agent who signs a standard NBA player contract (or a player who signs, or is converted to, a standard NBA player contract while under a Two-Way Contract) cannot be traded for three months following the date the contract is signed or until December 15 of the Salary Cap Year in which the contract is signed, whichever is later.

For sign-and-trade transactions, the foregoing rule does not apply to the initial trade but rather applies if the contract is traded a second time.
