The general rule in an expansion draft is that because of the CBA, UFAs and RFAs cannot be protected and cannot be drafted. With that in mind and assuming the draft is after this season, I agree with your first 7 and add Len to make it eight. Goran does not have to be protected because of his opt out clause where he will be a free agent so I move Goodwin into the protected class. Green cannot be protected or drafted.

So protected would be Bledsoe, Plumlee, Morris twins (2), I. Thomas, T.J. Warren, Len, and Goodwin.

Unprotected but ineligible for expansion draft G Dragic, Green, Randolph

Unprotected Ennis, Tucker, Tolliver, and Z Dragic

A year later it looks quite different. An expansion team might take Ennis.

This doesn't matter here. Like I mentioned in the OP this would have been better done prior to the draft and FA, but it wasn't so we are going with rosters as they currently sit and thus Dragic, Green etc are available for this exercise.

It's hard to find 8 players worth protecting on that s**t roster.

My plan is to compile the list Monday morning so anyone who would like to comment for any team please get it in soon.

The toughest decision was whether to leave Lee unprotected, but I'm guessing with a cap of only $45M, the expansion team isn't going to want to commit a third of their cap space to a 31 year old complimentary player. And if they do, we'll take the cap space thank you very much.

I was on the fence about this too, but I think you have to swap Ezeli and Lee (i.e. keep Lee, don't keep Ezeli). Doubtful you'd really get much with that TPE, and Lee is a useful player.

Funny that there was debate about Josh Smith, yet nobody else has commented about this one (yet).

I acutaly think that there's 3 options for the last unprotected spot: Lee, Bogut and Ezeli. On talent, Ezeli would be the obvious 9th man, but he's very cheap, youngish and a sure expansion team selection if available. Lee and Bogut both might get passed over. If anything, I'd expect Lee to be taken over Bogut. If an expansion team takes a couple of big $$ vets, they would want them to play, not be limited to 25 mpg for 60 games as Bogut probably is.

Bogut's contract also runs a year longer than Lee's - and I expect an expansion team would want to spend their own money as soon as possible (rather than have their cap filled for a long time with bad/questionable contracts from other teams).

I agree with the general consensus re: Bogut - leave him unprotected and he's getting snapped up, if only to use him as trade bait. Losing him also leaves us with Ezeli as our only C...not willing to risk that.

I think you're probably right though that our FO would protect Lee and we'd likely see Ezeli get selected.

Still need answers for
Brooklyn (Trader Joe, perhaps?)
Chicago
Houston (LarsV8?)
Memphis
San Antonio

I am as you all know a Utah fan, but I'll take a shot at the Spurs' list. If anyone (especially Spurs' fans!) disagree, please do ring in, I claim no authority whatsoever.

Protected: Duncan, Ginobili, Parker, K. Leonard, Splitter, Kyle Anderson, P. Mills, Danny Green
Unprotected: Ayres, Baynes, Belinelli, Bonner, Bryce Cotton, Daye, Diaw, C. Joseph

Only real tough call was Diaw, whom they obviously like...but I don't see him making the cut over the previous 8.

I think San Antonio's 8 is pretty clear. No expansion team is going to want Diaw anyway. Remember the last time Diaw was on an expansion-caliber roster? He literally expanded.

Darn, not enough time to due the whole league, haha. Here is the Western Conference in my eyes. I might get filleted on some things, but I used my previous eye tests, advanced metrics, and my unbiased demeanor ( total BS) to make the lists.

Western Conference
Southwest Division
Dallas Mavericks
Dirk Nowitzki
Monta Ellis
Chandler Parsons
Tyson Chandler
Devin Harris
Brandan Wright
Jameer Nelson (I might get hate for this, but he is a really solid back-up.)

Houston Rockets
James Harden
Dwight Howard

(Javale McGee, J.J. Hickson, Darell Arthur, Randy Foye, Quincy Miller, Erick Green, Alonzo Gee)

Minnesota Timberwolves

Zach LaVine
Thaddeus Young
Shabazz Muhammad (Keep him due to his off-season.)
Nikola Pekovic

(Anthony Bennett, Ronny Turiaf, Chase Budinger, Corey Brewer, J.J. Barea, Mo Williams, Glenn Robinson III, Robbie Hummel)

Oklahoma City Thunder
Kevin Durant
Russel Westbrook
Serge Ibaka
Reggie Jackson
Kendrick Perkins
Steven Adams
Anthony Morrow (Tough choice between him and Lamb)
Mitch McGary

(Jeremy Lamb, Andre Roberson, Nick Collison, Perry Jones, Grant Jarret, the ghost of Josh Huestis)

Nicolas Batum
Weley Matthews
Robin Lopez
Damian Lillard
C.J. McCollum
Thomas Robinson
Chris Kaman

(Joel Freeland, Dorell Wright, Meyers Leonard, Steve Black, Victor Claver, Allen Crabbe)

Utah Jazz
Gordon Hayward (Though I personally would flee from his contract)
Derrick Favors
Dante Exum (Though I think he is going to be dreadful)
Alec Burkes
Trey Burk
Rodney Hood
Rudy Gobert
Enes Kanter (Though personally I would save Booker)

(Steve Novak, Dee Bost, Carrick Felix, Ian Clark, Trevor Booker, Jeremy Evans, Toure’ Murry)

Pacific Divison
Golden State Warriors
Steph Curry
Klay Thompson
Draymond Green
Andre Igoudala
Andrew Bogut

Los Angeles Clippers
Chris Paul

Los Angeles Lakers
Julius Randle
Kobe Bryant
Jordan Hill (Beautiful unguaranteed contract next season.)

Phoenix Suns
Eric Bledsoe
Goran Dragic
Markieff Morris
Marcus Morris
Isaiah Thomas

(Derrick Williams, Carl Landry, Omri Casspi, Reggie Evans, Ryan Hollins, Trey Johnson)

My take on Chicago:

Protect:
Noah
Gibson
McBuckets
Butler
Mirotic
Pau
Hinrich
Rose(really tempted to leave him unprotected, but ultimately I think they wouldn't)

Unprotected:
Dunleavy
Snell
Mohammed
Brewer
Moore
Brooks
Jones
Bairstow

Brooklyn:

Bogdanovic
Karasev
Plumlee
AK47
Teauge

Unprotected:
Deron Williams

Jarrett Jack

I honestly couldn't find 8 guys worthy of being protected and don't even know who Brown is. I think they would be thrilled to give up any of the high-priced veterans outside of Lopez. Would love a real Nets guy to come in and correct me if this is wrong tho.

Interesting couple of lists, Chuck. If that happens with BK I wonder if an expansion team would build a team with Smoove and DWill and cheap players like Lamb, Nelson, Ennis, etc. It would be a risk, but could also put some butts in the seats.

Where do expansion teams draft? How does that work?

They have usually picked 4th in the draft so as not to interfere with the opportunity for the lotto teams to move up into the top 3.

And yeah I think Deron might be tempting for an expansion team, and I think the Nets would be thrilled if it happened.

I don't think they'd leave Bullock unprotected, they see him as a solid building block. Doc is trying him at the starting SF already. It'd probably be between Wilcox and Barnes, depending on how Wilcox rookie season goes.
Also, is MLE for Hawes really an ugly contract? he refused a couple bigger offers just this offseason.

Hawes contract is great for a very good 3rd big. If anything he's underpaid.

I think they would keep Joe Johnson. As overpaid as he is, they need him. I would switch him for Teague. I'd also switch Alan Anderson (who was actually good for them!) for Brown.
