Thunder rolls: OKC wins, getting out of a massive contract for flippable pieces and a future pick too

Sunset flip: both teams win. Phoenix gets their "dollar", OKC gets some nice quarters...and save dollars.

Beyond Thunderdome: both teams lose. Suns give up good pieces but take on a huge contract and only get to the middle; Thunder could have at least waited to see if more desperate offers rolled in.

PHX basically bet on themselves making the playoffs with this trade.. which quite frankly, I like their chances. If they can use their $18M on Gallo they are starting to put together a hell of a roster which IMO is on par with Utah/Portland.

People saying it's an overpay to just barely make the playoffs are missing the big picture.. the playoffs are huge for their bottomline, the city, and keeping Booker happy.

Would OKC really have said no without the 1st, or did Phx bid against themselves ?

I think at minimum they would have said not now which if Phoenix really does want Gallo or another higher level veteran FA hurts their pitch a bit. But now they have Paul as another drawing card.

Of course I still don't think they overpaid. I think this is a good price for them.

I think Phoenix had to add Draft compensation, the only thing I find regrettable is that they sent a 2022 pick. Not only is it potentially the double draft, but there is a way higher risk of Chris Paul falling off in two years and the pick not conveying, which is really bad. Should have been 2021.

The pick being 2022 is all Presti. OKC doesnt own its own pick in 2022 and its the double draft (Potentially).

Sam wasnt takin no 2021 pick.

Can Presti help facilitate a Harden to Philly trade now with SGA a year ahead of his free agency and take on Simmons? He can build one heck of a roster around Simmons with the assets he has at his disposal.

I really think all these picks are not going to be high value unless they are traded in, otherwise you end up like Danny Ainge with 3 picks in a draft you don't want to waste roster spots on.

The reeking of desperation got OKC maximum value here. That loosely protected 1st rounder should never be on the table when you are the Suns. Rubio and Oubre should have been enough.

I think the idea is find a star with one of the picks--most likely one of their own after they finish selling off and then you use the arsenal of picks to go land the next Harden that suddenly becomes available.

And actually I kinda love the idea of Presti going to Houston now and saying you can have your picks back plus for returning Harden home and going from there.

Think of the point guards now to have donned a Suns jersey:
Steve Nash
Jason Kidd
Penny Hardaway (even if he was there as a forward)
Chris Paul
Kevin Johnson
Stephon Marbury
Goran Dragic

That's pretty amazing

I like Harell for the Suns more than Gallo, tbh. I think Trez has become ridiculously undervalued for a guy who had a major impact for the Clips last season (up until the playoffs, where he had many surrounding issues)

This is a great trade for both teams. Don’t see it as an overpay in the slightest. The right direction for the suns and the thunder also trending the right way.

Too much going on in the poll but this is a win win trade.

Paul was gonna be in much higher demand than people might think. Clips and Bucks both desperately need him. Other teams like the suns would have been chasing him too. Smart to get this done early.

Paul was worth more than Ricky and an expiring Oubre. He was worth a future 1st too.

Its the protection on that pick that makes this deal really risky.

Funny I just popped over to the GB and the general impression there seems to be that OKC didn't get much in return and that PHX killed in this trade, FWIW

We focus too much on contracts, they focus too much on names. It all checks out.

Overpay from a value standpoint, but the Suns very likely being a playoff team has so much intrinsic value to the franchise with respect to fan interest and resulting ticket sales and merchandise that it totally makes sense from a business standpoint. Win-win presuming both teams aren't done making moves.
