I think we just wait for him to be an expiring then trade him at the draft this coming year. I wish we would trade Matisse and Jerami even more right now before the deadline.

Side note but i think Simons would be awesome as a 6th man on the Spurs. I obviously wouldn't give much for him if I'm the spurs but he would be fun to watch there

Spurs are playing it really smart slow rolling their rebuild around Wemby. They should be able to add 1-2 quality prospects in the '25 draft depending how ATL and CHI fare in addition to their own pick. I agree there's really no need for them to send any assets for Simons at this point. Maybe next offseason or better yet in 2 years when he's a FA.

He only has 2yrs left on his current deal, so the investment should not be an issue for most teams, he is due $25.89mil this year & $27.67mil next year, at which point he will be 27, still well within his prime as a player.
Given the new CBA & judging by the types of deals for players similar to him (6th man\scorer off the bench type), I would anticipate he will likely sign for less than his current salary to another team (not for POR), especially a competitive one, as he wants to win.
Defensive issue aside, he is a very good offensive player 21/22 pts/game LY on 37%/38% 3pt shooting on 9att/game on a high usage rate (28.9), where opposing teams were overwhelmingly focused on him when he was on the floor.
He is worth and should be able to return a 1st round pick at minimum. Now is that what Cronin is asking for? Or is he asking for (2) 1st's and a young player? That is just unknown.
However, he certainly has more trade value than (1-2) 2nd's and bad contracts. At least for this year, going into his contract year, next year? Probably less than he could get now, all the more reason to trade him now.
Why should he be worth a 1st round pick at minimum if you’re also saying he’s MASSIVELY overpaid? If you sign that he will sign in 2026 for less than he’s making now, that would be both a raw paycut in sheer numbers, and even larger paycut as percentage of the cap, as the cap keeps rising?
I hunk he’s worth a borderline first, personally, but you can’t reasonably sell him as both destined to sign for a lower contract (while still in the HEART OF HIS PRIME), AND a good enough contract currently to be worth a 1st, or even 2 1sts and a young player. If we assume he’ll sign for less in a couoke years, teams would probably just wait you out and also not give up a first for a guy that even you view as wildly overpaid?
Well, I said he was overpaid, not MASSIVELY overpaid.
He is at $25/$27 for the next 2 years, Malik Monk just signed for $17mil (will be $20mil in Simons FA year), KCP for $22. So I view Simons in that range, he could sign for a little higher than either of those players did in 2 years, given the salary cap likely going up, so maybe right under\around $25mil? The real unknown is how the new CBA is going to affect contracts going forward.
Simons was signed under the old CBA, not the new one, so chances are teams won't be spending as much money on players like him as they would have previously. I also remain unconvinced that most players' salary will remain at certain percentages of the cap, as the best players will take more (haves) and mid\lower players will get less (have nots).
I agree, he is worth a 1st round pick, I don't know how Cronin views his value, I am guessing we will find out, as Simons should be dealt in the near future (trade deadline), maybe Joe procrastinates and it is in the offseason next year (that would be a mistake IMO). Early rumors were that he viewed Grant worth (2) 1st's and Simons worth slightly more. I don't agree with either of those assessments and maybe he doesn't either, maybe he is just posturing?
As for why would a team trade for him now instead of waiting (2) years? Because they view him as a piece that can help them win now. I cannot see any team holding off because in 2 years they could possibly sign him away for free, that makes zero sense to me. Now maybe, if this was the trade deadline a year from now, a team could take that posture to leverage a smaller price from POR, but 2 years out? I don't buy that, the type of team that trades for Simons is going to want him as a scorer off the bench to help them win right now. They aren't going to wait 2 years when they have the chance to win now, there are no guarantees that any team will be a playoff contender (2) years from now.

Re: Trade value for Anfernee Simons?
I don't get it either. Walton1one says that giving Simons $30m+ on his new deal in 2026/27 would be idiotic. Guess what Simons is making relative to the cap this year? 18.2%. What is 18.2% of the cap in 2026/27: $31m. If Simons is idiotic at $30m+ then his current deal is also idiotic. So how is that worth a 1st?
Look, we will all find out, however, I think this new CBA is going to change that paradigm. The stars will still get their money, but bench\role players are going to get squeezed IMO. The 2nd apron is extremely punishing, there are only (4) teams I think that are over it currently?
One of those teams, BOS, is defending champion, signed all their key players and then put the team up for sale for the next owner to figure out.
Another team, PHX, has an owner that, for right now is "repercussions be dammed". Let's see if he feels that way in 1/2 years' from now. HOU is already hedging that he will change his mind.
One of the other teams? MIN, who just dealt away KAT and split his massive salary into smaller deals. It will be curious to see what Randle re-signs for next year (if he does re-sign there) or if they continue to operate above the 2nd apron.
The last is MIL. They will be interesting to watch IMO. How long do they stay with the Dame\Giannis pairing if it isn't working?
I suspect that teams will sign mid-level players for shorter deals, to give themselves more flexibility (float b\t 1st & 2nd apron). What players made relative to the cap LY, may not be the same moving forward.
I will add to others's comments, Simons is a better player than Trent Jr IMO. A far superior offensive player, a multi-dimensional scorer compared to Trent Jr, a player that other opposing teams focus on, they don't do that for Trent Jr.
Trent jr had a contract offer from TOR that he could have taken, but he and his agents' (Klutch) gambled that his value was worth more and he was left standing when the music\money stopped, so he took a minimum deal with a playoff team to hopefully raise his worth and replay musical chairs next year.

That’s funny man I just put that connection together too. That’s epic.
The blazers aren’t giving him away tho so… we got to come to something lol
He could potentially be a borderline all star there. Gotta give to get..
